I have a MIA strat with HSS and the S-1/superswitch setup. My humbucker went bad (thank you to those that helped me diagnose that in another topic). I have decided to convert to three singles so I bought a pickguard and a set of custom shop Texas Specials which I can't wait to play but here's my problem. Do I install a standard volume pot and 5-way switch and get rid of the S-1 system or rewire it like an American Deluxe strat with the S-1? Has anybody used normal pickups in that configuration? Thanks for any input, it's appreciated.

The bottom line here is that only you can answer this.

Objectively speaking, some find the S-1 system a seriously welcome inclusion into their guitars whereas others find it an utter waste of time and electronically, an accident waiting to happen. Your dilemma here is essentially money. See, if you had all the extra parts, you could try out the Texas Specials with your current S-1 System and then, flip them over into a 'standard' wired Strat pickguard system and then decide which is more advantageous to you, regardless of what anyone (albeit, well meaning) tells you.

Your best bet at this point is to wire them into your S-1 system for now. I'm sure you can locate some Strats in music stores which have the 'standard' wiring and Texas Specials installed where you can make a comparison.

Bear in mind though that if you have a 'thing' against 60 cycle hum, an S-1 wired guitar will bring it out more so than in a 'standard' one.

OK so I just finished installing the Texas Specials with the S-1 switch setup. I used the wiring diagram for an American Deluxe Strat with the scn's. At the advice of others on this forum I had an extra S-1 so I didn't have to scavenge the one on my HSS setup which made things alot easier. The covers for the new pickups were white and my trim is all parchment so I boiled the covers in watered down coffee for a few minutes and the color matched nicely. Hehe it looks like a strat now with three singles. So far I love the way it sounds but I won't get a chance to take it for a real walk until tomorrow.
