What is the best amp in your opinion? I was thinking of trading up later for my amp (I have a practice amp). I'm saving money for a better one. What are your recommendations? I was looking at a Peavey vypr because of the effects presets.

what do you think?

Each one of us has a different ear for the tone we are after. Our opinions on guitars, amps, fx, picks, etc are all different.
Since you are still saving up for the amp upgrade my suggestion is to go out and try different amps at different music stores. The right amp will find you if you do this.

Since you are asking, you might look into some versatility like the new G-Dec 3. You can learn alot about effects and amp models, without breaking the bank, for when you want to to take a bigger step into something like a Mesa-Boogie Dual Rectifier or maybe a Fender Deluxe Reverb or whatever suits your taste in tone.

The best amps are tubes amps, with no effects.

A low power tube amps is better if you don't gig

Effects on board are compromise and those amps are for beginner and they are not good quality. Poor tone
You could be happy with that, few months !

But you ask what it is the best amp ?

Answer: Tubes amps

My opinion would be to get two things:

First, get a Line6 Pod or something similar. A Pod will let you use headphones, and can also go direct to PA or through an amp's effects loop, so it'll be good now, and work later, too. I got one used for $70 a few years ago, and it was a great purchase. Most importantly, I was able to hear what amp models I liked the most, and plan my big purchase (a 30-watt tube amp - I bought a Peavey Classic 30) accordingly.

Once you've done this, and you have a good idea of the sort of "real" amp you want, go out and get it. But a Pod will be good for now, and a huge upgrade over your practice amp. Mine was, at least!

"Eh Ben" cest bon ton anglais ??

LadyVendettaAngel

Effects can and will break the bank, my advice is to look for an amp that you can drive to natural distortion, like a Blues Junior, i have an old Crate with effects and what sounds good to me close to the amp, actually sounds atrocious to an audience. I never use this amp, it may have a minimal use for recording backing tracks in the future, but for live play it is not adequate.

I truly believe that the effects game is out of control. You have to be able to play everything that you play in clean mode, technique is paramount, I embarassingly learned that lesson years ago.
If you are able to analyze a lot of pro players rigs, they keep it as simple as possible, Nothing is worse than sitting in the audience while the guitarist is constantly fiddling with knob settings every song, that makes me want to burn it to the ground and walk out !!

Seriously, it is enough of a challenge to get it right. Effects do not allow you to control distortion, so all the subtle dynamics that you can tweak out with your fingers or pick and fingers get drowned out. A player that can use her/his amp as a colorful tone instrument is immediately recognisable, like a foreign accent..
