Has anyone done this conversion on a 56 NOS reissue strat ?
Installed the fat 50's in place of the stock pickups that are installed in the 56 strat reissue.
I'm looking for a bit more sustain, a little warmer tone while still retaining that classic 50's sound. As well as cutting out some of the extreme treble from the bridge pick up.
Too much to ask?

I have the SCN's in another strat and those are great so i do not need to replicate that set up.

Thanks

Fat 50s certainly go in that direction, but I'm not sure that they will be a lot different from the Custom 50s you likely have right now. Custom 50s are typically wound in the 5.9k to 6.0k range whereas the Fat 50s are wound in the 6.1k to 6.3k range. You might rather consider Texas Specials or perhaps the Lindy Fralin Blues Specials or maybe even the Rio Grande Vintage Tallboys. All these are overwound and will tame the bridge pickup problem fairly well.

SMark,
Thank you for the advice, I'm also considering the Custom Deluxe real soon before it becomes unavailable, so out of your choices perhaps the fralin's or Blues special.
Thus to complement 3 very different sounding strats.

But also would a bridge pickup Tone control option due the trick. As I'm playing with the tone shaping parameters on my various Amps, I do like the sound of these pickups, I just need to tweak to a warmer sound. ( I know it is quite subjective) since we all hear differently.
Thanks.

Sure that's a good option for the bridge pickup. I have the bridge pickup hooked to a tone control on most of my Strats. It can make a big difference. One of the reasons that the no-load tone pots have become so popular is that you can use one on the bridge pickup and then get the best of both worlds.

Went to Guitar Center today, plugged into a 15 watt blues junior, interesting combo with the 56 NOS, took some time to find the right set up but I liked what I was hearing.
perhaps an amp reconfiguration is in order.

I'm playing thru
An early 1960's Magnatone
A Hot Rod Deluxe 40
A 600 Champ

I have a '57 Magnatone 213 that is a fairly dark toned amp, and it really loves Strat bridge pickups...

Most definitely, yes, that makes you vintage. This 213 is my second Maggie. The first was a 1950 small steel guitar amp with an 8" speaker. It was cool & I wish I still had it...
