Hey All,

Someone recently told me that all the electronics and pickguards that are used in MIM Fender guitars are manufactured in the U.S. then exported and assembled in Mexico.

Is this correct?

Is it possible then, with all the different varieties of pickups available through the years, to identify single coil p'ups just by looking at them? How can one tell the difference, let's say, between a Standard Strat p'up and a Fat Strat or TexMex?

Any info would be appreciated.

Why do some people just make S&*# up, and then there are those that think it's the gospel because so and so said it, and then repeat it as if they know it all ???

(not you Texas)

No they make pups in Mexico as well.

The CV (Squire) pups are made in China.

There are some ways to tell the difference from MIM and USA.

Mfc materials, resistance readings, wire colors/material, some noticeable cosmetic things. Custom Shop pups have cloth wires for example.

Fender doesn't make like a hundred different pickups for say a Tele so sometimes it not hard to identify what is what.

Then is there a way to tell a difference between different MIM p'ups and different MIA p'ups?

I mean, I know some p'ups are clearly labeled but is there a way to know the difference between AlNiCo's and ceramics just by looking?

Is there some kind of reference or chart that tells what the meter readings would indicate what type the pickup is?

The subject(s) of your question is what I call, "Infallible Web Dogma." It never ceases to amaze me how so many can be so profoundly gullible and ignorant but moreover, insist on defending such inane drivel like their lives depended upon it.

Well I would say it just comes for experience. Fender doesn't have a “chart” or any thing you could reference. As far as resistance readings, any pickups that they make for resale do have specs if you check their site. But there really isn't any info you can get. I just happen to have interest so have saved photos and specs of quite a few pickups for reference. A lot of the info I have was gathered because I have had the pickups myself.

Usually what happens is a guy has a pickup(s) and wonders what the heck it could be if he thinks they have been changed from factory stock (per model guitar) or some junk out of a drawer . Then he could post them on a forum with resistance readings, photos. Details like the kind of wire (vinyl or cloth), wire color, pole pieces, type of bobbin.

Then these aforementioned forks with “experience” would know what they are from the info.

Here are some Tele pups,Alnico:

Tele MIM, Ceramic ( notice the bars)

MIM Standard Strat pups will have these ceramic bars too.

I thank you! Unfortunately, we have to label that whole passel of unadulterated bullcrap something. Ironically, those types who enjoy wallowing in it inevitably don't have a clue as to what it means let alone whether it is derogatory or complimentary.
