I originally posted this over at the TDPRI forums and I figured I'd post it here to double my chances of an answer, haha:

Hey all. I just picked myself up my first Telecaster, a White MIM, nothing special. I loved the SCNs in my dad's American Deluxe, so I figured I'd throw a set in. The swap went relatively uneventfully, except for just some minor things...

First of all, the bridge pickup seems to be acting a little funny compared to my dad's Am Dlx. The one in my Mexi is a touch noisier than the one in my dad's Am Dlx, not enough to break the whole "noiseless" thing, but there's a slightly noticeable difference in background hum volume between the two. I attribute this to simple differences in the two guitar's electronics.

However, the main thing is that the bridge pickup has a lot of handling noise; with gain on the guitar, every little noise seems amplified, flips of the switch, turns of knobs, you can even hear me rub my hand on the back of the neck if you listen closely. My dad's Am Dlx has a little bit of this handling noise, but significantly less than on my Mexi.

Again, all of these minor issues are on the bridge pickup. The neck works perfectly as I expect.

My question is this: could these differences be attributed to the way I wired the pickup? All I did was unsolder the old pickup and wire in the new one the exact way the old one was (with the addition of the extra ground shield of course) it goes like this:

Black/Green (Ground/Shield Ground) --> little metal tab screwed inside the cavity that's wired to the vol. pot ground. Bridge plate's ground is also wired here.

Yellow (hot) --> lug on the 3-way switch where the old pickup was soldered.

Could the fact that the bridge plate's ground and the pickup's grounds are both wired to that little metal tab that Fender installs create any unnecessary noise? If so, how should I remedy it? If not, what could possibly be causing the bothersome handling noise I'm experiencing?

Welcome.

No to all your questions which are phrased for a yes/no answer.

As to your other questions, apparently, many of the Tele SCN pickups, especially the bridge models are microphonic. Meaning, the coil windings are loose because the pickups have not been fully wax saturated (aka potted). As a result, the offending pickup is absorbing any audible sound around it including in some cases, producing nasty, unmusical feedback at elevated volumes. The remedy is not to return the set/pickup as from what I've been seeing and hearing, there is a probability of the replacement(s) exhibiting the same malady. Rather, take your pickup(s) to a COMPETENT tech who has experience with correctly potting pickups.
