I have a Fender Standard (Mexican) HSS Strat that I purchased almost ten years ago while in High School. Ive been apart from my guitar for a long time while in college and doing other crap, but I'm looking to restart the obsession.

I want to revitalize my guitar with some new pickups among other things...I play various styles, but not a pro at all. I would like to be able to get a nice full blues sound (less biting treble than it currently has) but also be able to use it for crunchier drive and hard distortion at times...
but as it is an HSS i will need a good bridge Humbucker and mid and neck singles.

I don't know where to begin looking for pickups so suggestions please!!

Welcome.

PLEASE don't take this sarcastically: Using your tone knob will clear up the excessive treble problem of your bridge pickup and will also aid with a crunchier drive and harder distortion.

For a full Blues sound, playing off any of the pickups you have now will achieve this. Again, the tone pots comes into play here too.

You can also go with a superior graphic EQ which surely would be cheaper than replacing your pickups.

Beyond all the above, you can receive thousands of legitimate opinions on what pickups works for others. The bottom line is, YOU have to hear the sound you are looking for and take it from there. There are many manufacturers with sound bytes of their pickups on their websites along with many players who have made YouTube demos of many pickups as well. These would be your best places to zero in on that tone you have in your head if you can't work your original ones to your satisfaction.

Welcome to the Forum.

There have been a lot of pickup change questions today. My first suggestion to everyone is to play with the pickup height. Moving the pickups closer to the strings will give added output and distortion, with a slight loss of sustain. Moving the pickups farther away from the strings will mellow them out and add some sustain.

Next would be playing with amp/fx settings.

If you still don't find what tone you are looking for then look at pickup options.

If you want a direct answer, ask them what they use in their Strats. There are opinions on other threads. I bought some alnico 3's for mine, mainly because I'm tight. Seriously, they are off a Hwy 1 Strat, and reputed to be versatile for clean and drive and distortion. They are ok, but I would like to try the 69's. Humbucker, who knows?

After all is said and tried from the previous posts, You should consider looking into Carvin's offerings for pickups.
I still have an old J.B.Player (strat copy), dropped in their single coils in middle and neck and their classic serie humbucker in the bridge with a dual to single coil tap switch.

Carvin has been around as long as fender and their quality is excellent.

I have a 07 Standard Strat HSS that I'm about to do a pickup change in. Based on previous Strats and pickup swapping, I'm thinking of going with Seymour Duncan SSL-2's or SSL-5's in the Neck and Middle positions and a Pearly Gates Plus in the Bridge.

I haven't settled on the 2's vs. 5's yet though. The 2's would be more vintage sounding which I like and the 5's would be more bluesy sounding which I also like. Also, I'm going to add the jumper wire on the switch to add the Bridge pup to the last tone control.

If you are using the SSL-2s, instead of the SSL-5, go with the SSL-6 as that has the flat (even) polepieces also. I have the SSL-2 in the neck position, an SSL-6 in the middle position and an SSL-3 in the bridge position.

After all of the preceding great advice is exhausted and PU change is imminent, why not look at Fender's competition, Carvin musical instruments, they are also from "Californyeah" =-) I've had their singles (middle/neck) and a high output humbucker in the bridge with dual to single coil switch on an old J B Player Fender strat copy.
Their prices are very affordable, since they are privately owned and market directly to consumers.

Have fun searching that tone !!!
