Contrary to popular belief, NO stacked pickup out there TOTALLY sounds and responds like a true single coil. To me, they are all a question of percentages. In the case of the Areas, I'd give them a 90%. YMMV.

Yes, I use them myself: 67/58/61 combo.

I thought about getting the prewired pickguard and switching the 67 in the middle with the 58 in the neck

I have Area 58s in the neck and middle, and the 61 in the bridge of my Strat. And no, they do not sound exactly like single coil pick-ups. I'm no good at tone descriptions, but IMO they're missing some "sparkle" and "harmonic overtones" when you play a note/chord. (I'd describe overtones as extra highs and lows that surround the note; maybe similar to what some call "bloom".) When played at louder volume through a good amp (my tech used a Matchless, Dr. Z, and a Victoria) they sound better than at low volume through my Blues Junior.

That said, when I'm cranking my Blues Junior with my Strat and a distortion pedal and jamming with other people, I notice the lack of single-coil hum more than I do the missing overtones. What I should do is have 2 Strats; one with the Areas for jamming in a band situation, and one with regular single coils for lower volume home playing.

Martian,
I was wondering how you set the string height using these pickups?
I was reading that the '58 is very susceptible to height. The '61 is probably as well, no?

I set the height to what Fender states in the "Strat Setup" for noiseless pups but wondered if you had tweaked further?

I bought the pre-wired setup in December and "Wow!" what difference from the stock pups. It's a variant of your setup, 58-N,67-M,61-B.
The 58 and 61 are "hotter" than the 67 so I'm curious as well, as to why you switched the 58 and 67?

Many thanks,
-T

Forgot to ask about the Gibson EB-2D...what color?

And my 1st sentence should read not "how" you set the pups but "at what height".

I set the bridge side the equivalent of a dime's thickness between the strings and the polepieces; the bass side, a nickel's thickness. As these are Alnico II magnets, their pull is a lot less than usual Strat pickups so this can be safely done without getting, "Stratitis". I do synchronize the magnetic flux as a matter of routine, any way.

You answered your own question: "The 58 and 61 are "hotter" than the 67..." This gives me a consistent volume balance through the pickup selector switch and a diminishing midrange as I head towards the neck. Thus, no mud, no fart, even at high volumes. Besides, when I use the neck and bridge pickups together, I defy anyone who didn't see that my guitar was a Strat to presume that it was anything other than a smokin' Tele!

The Gibson is Tobacco Sunburst.

As always, you're quite welcome!
