Hey y'all. I know that on some Gibson guitars I've seen people split the humbuckers to get a single coil sound. If I have an HSS Strat can that be done as well with a push pull knob or something of that nature so I can enjoy the SSS and HSS sound on the same guitar?

If I am not mistaken the pickup has to be made with additional wire/s to allow for that type of option.

A Standard Fat Stat (Fender HB bridge)

Problem is it is middle and bridge combined.

An easy way to get the bridge alone ( single coil) would be to leave the wiring like this Fat Strat, and install a push/pull pot, and have that turn the middle pickup on or off (switchable yellow middle pup wire to 5 way).

Then in position 2, you would have bridge alone (single coil) or add the middle if you want it.

What HSS do you have and how is it wired now ?

If your Fender HB has a 4 lead wire, the black and white leads would be joined together as these two leads link the coils together in series. To kill one coil, a push pot or mini-switch can be used where upon throwing the switch, these two joined leads would be sent to ground where it would leave only one coil of the pickup still on. Of course, if you want said HB to be single coil always (which I couldn't fathom why), you would permanently solder the black and white wires directly to ground.

Hello!

Another option which I have used is a mini DP/DT (on/off/on) switch which would allow you to chose between the following settings for your Humbucker:

1. Front coil
2. Both in series
3. Rear coil

You can site the switch inbetween the tone knobs.

Here is a link which should help
http://www.smitspickups.com/coiltapping.htm

Enjoy!

Andy

You could also use a DPDT on/on/on switch which, when wired like a 'regular' dual sound switch would allow one humbucker's configuration to be:

1. Both coils on in series.
2. Only one coil on.
3. Both coils on in parallel.

The above is probably the more usable option as there is very little difference in sound between the the two coils once split.

50 points Martian!

Enjoy!
