heya, there's some talk on another thread about talk boxes but basically there are two kinds

1. the original type that takes a speaker output from your amp, runs it into a high powered horn driver enclosed in the pedal, and send that speaker output into a tube and up into your mouth. Then you mouth away with that LOUD wailing guitar tone coming out of your face, into a mic.
This can be not-fun for gums and teeth as you're putting quite a lot of volume in your mouth and they take a lot of vibration. It's also complex because you need to run a separate speaker output to it, so you have to consider the volume of your amp, and the impedance of your speakers, and whether you run it as a parallel speaker output, or you set up an A/B switch to mute your normal speakers and switch to the talk box.

2. Now you can get talk boxes from companies like Danelectro which have a little mini-amp built in, and you run them like any normal guitar pedal with just the passive guitar input, when you switch them in the min-amp sends the guitar tone up the tube. This means you don't have to mess with the speaker output of your amp at all, don't need a separate A/B switch, and you're taking a lot less guitar volume into your mouth and wont damage your gums. Sounds just as good, so I think it's a real improvement.

Check this out though - the origins of the talk box are in this Kooky invention from the 1930s, the SONOVOX. There's some amazing stuff on Youtube...

and let's not forget Stevie Wonder!

David Gilmour is perhaps a famous talkbox user. Check out "Keep Talking" from the P.U.L.S.E. live CD and DVD if you're curious about how a talkbox sounds. Very cool! :!:

You can get some really wild sounds out of them.

To add to the creative sounds, try one of these too :
