Does anybody know the difference? Do they sound the same, but with different names?

The Tex-Mex's are actually a very balanced set of pickups. They've got nice cleans, with a very bell like tone and the response is awesome. They deal with overdrive and distortion well and just sound nice overall.

Tone is a very hard thing to describe, and if you ask 10 people to give an opinion about a specific pickup you will probably get 15 different answers.

Anyway, to my ear, with all things being equal (guitar, amp, settings), I would say the Tex Mex pickups are not quite as 'dark' and have a smoother mid-range than the Texas Specials.

But then again, others might disagree.

OK, I know that they're in the SRV strat, but that doesn't always mean that it gives you the SRV tone!

You also have to consider he used 12's and 13's on his Strat... No whimpy 9's or 10's for SRV...
