I guess the Fender Richie Sambora stratocaster includes a mid boost preamp. Are they the same spec as the eric clapton preamps, or are they a different sound. Just looking for a nice kit for my strat.

The Sambora unit is no longer made. As I remember them, they were slightly weaker than the Clapton unit and had an on-off switch which the Clapton unit doesn't have.

On-board preamps are limited in the sense that the 'gain' pot dials in and out all predetermined frequencies where of course, this circuit is always on. Of note too is that the volume pot must be changed to a much lower resistance to accommodate it. Some players are perfectly happy with the selected frequencies of these units whereas some obviously find them limited and lacking. Needless to say, as the battery begins to wear out, this creates a whole other bunch of sonic, shall we say, "variations" which guaranteed, are not pleasing at all to all. There are other considerations here too: Where to fit the battery in the guitar and how accessible shall it be when it comes time to replace it.

Your best bet is to buy a superior graphic EQ pedal. This will allow YOU to dial in (and out) the frequencies of YOUR choice while also being able to control the overall amount of boost. Best of all, you can use it for any guitar and shut the unit off per your preference. YMMV.

The first Sambora Strats with the HSS setup and the huge mother-of-pearl stars had the 25dB mid-boost/TBX electronics of the Clapton Strat. It's basically the same circuit except for the addition of a push-push on/off switch.

With the introduction of the newer models and the change to the ceramic Noiseless pickups in 1999, the circuit has been modified with 2 resistors and a no-load tone pot replacing the TBX of the older versions.

The resistors reduced significantly the gain level from 25dB to 12dB, hence's the weakness you're expecting from the "revised" active circuit. Tough luck, this guitar has been discontinued in 2002.
