I'm setting up a new pickguard with all new parts for a Classic 50's (same setup for a Classic 60). Fender How-To's show the cap being soldered between the two middle tabs of the tone pots. (I assume it doesn't matter with tab to use to keep the wires neatly organized, please correct me if I'm wrong). When I opened up my Classic 50, the cap was soldered between the first tab of the second tone pot and the other lead to the body of the same tone pot.

I also found a black wire on the 5 way switch (looking straight down with the neck pointing forward) between the last tab (closest to me) on the left to the first tab on the right (towards the neck). This is not shown on the Fender How-To. Can someone explain what is correct, or why the difference. My guess is sharing (or using) the tone control for a different switch position.

Thanks in advance.

The two tone pots are orientated different ways so they cross the wiring so that turning each control ( clockwise for instance) gives the same effect.

That's why one wire from the switch goes to one pot on the outer terminal ( lowest pot) and the other switch wire goes to the middle terminal on the pot nearest the vol. control.

You always need to use one middle and one outer terminal.

The black wire on the switch jumps one side of the switch to the other. Those are the "common" termianls that are always connected to the wiper. So it has to be there to connect everything together (one side or row of the switch to the other) to go to the volume pot.

50's 60's like this ( cap value veries but .022 works good)

One leg of the capacitor is to be soldered to the ground of the back of the upper pot whereas the other leg is to be soldered to the right terminal of the upper tone pot as it sits OEM in the pickguard. Meaning, with the shaft facing towards the floor, the three terminals of this upper pot are closer to you than the can of the pot. From this right terminal, the capacitor's leg is to continue to the middle terminal of the other tone pot where it gets soldered to.

I've got a question for you guys.. I wired 2-250k CTS pots (.022pf cap) exactly the same as the diagram shows, and the tone pot for the neck pickup is acting like a Volume pot. It shuts all sound completely off at 0.

Any idea why?

You put the cap directly between the terminals of the two tone pots rather than putting it between the ground and the right terminal of the upper tone pot and then extending the leg of it from the right terminal of the upper pot to the middle terminal of the lower pot.
