I just changed out a Tex-Mex set with a Texas Special. The do have a nice warm and darker sound, and i have them set to factory height spec. I heard they can be brought up a bit, but not too much. Just curious what others have found to be a good place for max benefit.

Second question. I play with 11's, but may go back to 10's. Is there a set out there with a wound G in 10's.

Thanks.

You can play with the heights of the pickups, suiting to your taste. The biggest thing to be cognizant of is not getting the bass side of the pickups too close to the strings or the magnets will actually start pulling on them. This in turn will create all sorts of crazy warbling from those strings on the upper frets and intonation on those strings will be impossible.

I know of no .010 gauge electric guitar string set which has a wound G. They usually start within the .011 gauge sets which uses a .018 gauge string for the G, the lightest gauge wound string I'm aware of for electric guitar.

Considering that a typical, full run .010 gauge set uses an unwound .016 for the G string, you'd probably feel marginal difference if you replaced the .016 with a .018 wound one as the difference of .002 is pretty much insignificant. The only drawback is that with every .010 string set you buy, you'll have to buy a wound .018 single to go with it.

or you can buy a string (5 pack) and use up your other sets ( I use .018):

Ernie Ball 3 pack:

I have my TS's @ 5/64 treble 5/32 bass

That's with the string fretted at the last.

Pickups set closer to the strings will give you more volume and more distortion, but less sustain.
Pickups set farther away from the strings will give you a cleaner tone and less volume, but more sustain.

Pickup height is personal preference. Do a search here on the Fender Forum for "Nickel Method". Use the Nickel Method as a starting point. Experiment with your pickup height until you find what is right for you.

Personally I have been setting my pickups down almost level with the pickguard.

I agree with CA, I find that you get better tone if you set your pickups a little lower. It really lets the strings speak like they were meant to.

Awesome, thanks! I'll experiment with some of these!

I set mine by ear. Yes, I said by ear not eye. I plug my guitar in my amp, crank it so its loud but clean, then play each pickup. I'll adjust the pickup on each screw (high e and low E) until it starts to "pull" the strings. I'll back it down just a tad. I'll do this for all the PU's. Doesn't work for the Lonestar strat because the Pearly Gates is just a little much. That puppy is almost flush with the pickguard because its output is too much compared to the single coils. Just my way of doing things...
