Ok, so here's the deal. I need gift ideas for my boyfriend. He plays guitar...mostly blues and he's very good. No joking around. Right now he has his sights set on selling 2 of the guitars he has right now and his base because he wants to get like...this sunburst stratocaster...I don't know...I'm not any good at music..and I don't know what's good or not. He likes Stevie Ray Vaughn if that gives you an idea of what he sounds like. So he wants this guitar, but he wants to put pick ups in it. And I don't know what would be the best ones to get. He said the ones he liked or something but I forgot..and I don't want to ask him cause that will give it away. I need some help, anything would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lauren

If he likes SRV, get him a set of Texas Specials. Another good idea would be to ask his guitar buddies if he's been talking about what kind of pickups he might want. I use different pickups in different guitars for different sounds, and he may have the same philosophy. The best advice I have to give you is to try not to get your feelings hurt if you buy him something that's not exactly what he wants, simply because pickups, like guitars and amplifiers, are so much a matter of personal preference. I'm not crazy about Seymour Duncan pickups, but they used to have a satisfaction policy, whereby you had a certain amount of time to trade your pickups if you didn't like them. That might be something to consider. I've dealt with EMG a lot in the last few years, and have gotten amazing service from them. You can contact both companies through their websites, as well as Fender themselves. They make awesome pickups, too. Sorry if I wasn't much help, but men are only simple creatures until it comes to our toys.

Oh thank you so much! I appreciate your response! I was thinking about going to our local music store that we went to not to long ago, and talking to the guy that he was talking to...cause like when they were talking about equipment I was so lost..haha. You don't prefer Seymour Duncan, but recommend Texas Specials... Hm. The other night he sent me this link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1954-FENDER-STRATOC ... 1e59199ad8\

But I was like...har har yeah right..so if that give you an idea of what i was trying to describe that he wanted..haha. You'd still recommend the Texas Specials?

I looked at the link. That price is actually a bit low for a genuine '54 Strat. But to get back on the subject, yeah, the Texas Specials are awesome. There are a lot of great pickups out there, some more "vintage" sounding, and some more "modern", but I don't personally know anyone who favors a Stratocaster and doesn't like the TX Specials at least a little bit. They'll give a wide range of usable tone, they're usually sold in a calibrated set, and they aren't expensive at all when compared to other good pickups. Dumb question, though, is he a car guy or a truck man? The question sounds stupid, but the answer will make a difference my recommendation.

OK. TX Specials are probably the way to go. They've still got that "Strat-itude", just with more testosterone. A man who drives a pickup truck is (usually) more concerned with function than flash, which is why I asked the question. TX Specials are kind of like a 4x4 truck, they're nice when they're clean, but they're better when you get 'em dirty. It ought to be a nice Christmas with a good set of pickups under the tree for his new guitar project. I hope I was some help.

+1 on the Texas Specials. I've had them in my Strat for almost a year now and I absolutely love them. I play mostly blues, and of course they're great for that but they also work very well for most other styles of music. :)

Texas specials are used in the Stevie Ray Vaughan signature Stratocaster, and they're great for a thick, bluesy tone. As has been said above, if these aren't exactly what he wants, don't be offended! Guitarists are really particular, and if you haven't written down, word for word, what he wants, it can be a crapshoot. To be honest, I'm sure he'll be floored by the thought that went into all this.

Thanks you guys so much...I actually got him talking to me last night cause I was trying to get him to say the ones he wanted but not by me just flat out asking him and he said Texas Specials! I was like omg yay! The only bad thing was that he was talking about another guitar model that he was considering and it was like modled after Srv's guitar but it comes with Texas specials in it...so I was like well crap. So does anybody have any other good suggestions for what would be a good gift that he would like? What are some things that you all like?

Well, if he's a really big SRV fan, he probably has a good TubeScreamer. If he doesn't, that would be a great gift. Or you could look for one of the SRV-style leather straps with the music notes on them. Just a thought.
