I prefer two different brands.

Dunlop Duo Design Straplocks

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=364008

or

Schaller Straplocks

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=360389

The Schallers are what Fender uses on their guitars with straplocks and I used them for almost 18 years. However, I like the Dunlop Strap locks better due to the Push-to-release button as opposed to the Pull-to-release button on the Schaller.

I agree with these choices and the reasoning thereof.

Both are good, and with Dunlop you can use a regular strap if you forget the one with the straplocks at home. I like schallers though, because they feel more secure and I've dropped my Strat (and caught it, luckily) twice when I used Dunlop. But I've heard horror stories about schallers too. I think that either would work if they're properly installed and cared for.

Either Dunlop or Schaller are good but here is the trick. Very carefully when you remove old trap pin, place one drop of wood glue in hole then screw in straplock to guitar body. Why? 50% of guitarists get lazy and their straplocks get loose and they do not have a Phillips #2 screwdriver around so they ... yes... gaffa the strap to the guitar!!! Ugly and guess what ...yea sometimes the whole thing falls out because of a loose screw that moves and juggles until you strip the hole oversize... ah the joys

I prefer Schallers. They're a little hard to release, with having to pull the plunger, but isn't that the point? I also like the way you can use a regular strap on the Schaller strap pins.

I'll go one over on the wood glue suggestion. Don't just put a drop of wood glue on the pin screw, but use loc-tite when you attach the strap lock, so the jam nut doesn't come loose. Finally, get your hands on a leather punch if it's at all possible. The right size hole in the strap end makes a huge difference in attaching the strap ends, and the better fit is much more secure. Just remember to remove leather a little bit at a time and keep checking the fit, that way you won't make the hole too big and mess up your strap.

So to recap:
Use wood glue on the pin screw
Punch the strap hole out for a proper fit
Use loc-tite for the machine threads on the strap lock
Use a nut driver or socket to get that jam nut on there tight.

One more thing to watch out for, Dave. After you install your strap locks, be very, very careful leaning your guitar against anything when you've got the strap on it. The body will be further from the floor, and prone to tip over. If you don't have a stand handy to set your guitar on, just take the strap off the guitar and it will sit pretty much like it does with the standard strap buttons. Just an observation about something I learned the hard (dumb) way.

One silly question:

How do you change strap lenght on leather straps when using Schallers?

I mean those straps (mainly leather) that in order to change lenght you need to unmount one part of the strap and place it in a different position of the main strap part. If you have Schallers in the end they are too thick for the narrow hole in the strap.
Before, I used to remove the Schallers, then change the strap lenght and finally put Schallers again. But it is true that if you repeate this a lot, the nuts usually come loose. Loctite in the thread is a good solution, but then, how do you change the strap length?

I prefer Schaller strap locks, or these:
http://shop.ebay.com/marvelstraplocks/m ... ksid=p3686

The Marvels are actually the same brand sold by GFS, but I have bought some from this seller on eBay as he has good prices and shipping on multiple sets.

If I'm not using either of those straplocks, I most likely am using one of my guitars with a DiMarzio cliplock strap, which is also a good option to consider.

"Ernie Ball Super Locks feature a push-button, quick-release design to provide a safe, complete 360-degree secure connection that keeps your guitar or other instrument close at hand. Ernie Ball mechanically engineered these guitar strap locks to ensure ultimate instrument protection. Positive locking pins ensure that the locks will not release until the buttons are completely depressed. The contoured design prevents accidental release. All Ernie Ball Super Locks are casehardened and steel-plated, making for the most robust and rust-resistant strap lock on the market. Securely fastening buttons mean that Super Locks can accommodate straps without their own locking mechanisms as well. Each guitar strap lock easily installs without any instrument modifications whatsoever."

I'd like to try these myself. I like the non-mod feature.

Hi, i compared the ernie ball strap locks to both the schallers and the dunlops side by side, and for me it was a no brainer that the ernie ball locks were better designed than the others imho, and they came with "buttons" that are shaped like "regular" strap buttons as opposed to the schallers design, like the ones that come pre installed on some fender Strats. That way, a regular strap will fit properly if need be. Dude, where's my strap?! The screws were a little longer, 3/16-1/4?, sorry, my arms have gotten too short with age, for good focusing on average sized print even with my head tilted way back with my eyes in a tight squint. The thread diameter seemed, yeah seemed i said!-to be only a bit larger, and screwing them in securely was a breeze without the need for additional drillng, thank God, imagine how easily the original hole could be accidentally reamed out to a large smooth bore hole from hell, that would i'm sure, provide a whole new repair scenario that would surely be a true blessing to someones day. That's all i have to say about that. This public service message is brought to you today, by the letter C.
