I'm in the market for an inexpensive($50 or less). I'm trying to achieve an late 70's early 80's distortion sound for that price. I currently have a Boss MT-2 but has too much gain. I'm thinking old Motley Crue, Ratt and Bon Jovi. I've kind of narrowed my choices down to a Boss DS-1, Delta Lab RD1, BBE AM 64American Distortion or a Danelectro DD-1Fab Tone.

I'm playing a Deluxe Fat Strat(with a Dimarzio Super Dist. humbucker in bridge) through a Fender scxd. Any ideas? Thanks.-Mike

I own the Boss MT-2. It is absolutely one BA pedal. The distortion knob can be backed off and takes gain away (rotate it counter clockwise). I have a Fender Highway 1 with a Super Distortion in the bridge. I play though a Roland Cube 30X, but I am in the market for a SCXD. I can get my guitar to sound like anything from Black Sabbath to Pantera and everything in between. And yes I can play a mean 10 Seconds to Love and Too Fast for Love with my set-up. Unfortunately the only pedal I used that was good for 80's rock was this, and it is a little more than you wanted to pay:

Thanks for responding. I figured that there wasn't going to be too many people that would. But I do own the MT-2. I love that pedal and it sounds great with the Super Distortion through the SCXD(on the clean channel). I think you'll be very happy with the tone you get. I figured the MT-2 is pretty good for 70's and 80's music but it seems like it might have just a little too much gain. I'm thinking some old Metallica and Anthrax type sounds. I'm just looking for the next step down.

I ended up finding the BBE AM-64 used at GC for $10. I have yet to hear what it sounds like because I told my wife I wouldn't open it till X-mas. But I figure for the price I couldn't go wrong. So we'll see. I'll keep you posted.

GC now has the SCXD for 279.99. Thats $40 less than what I paid 9 monthes ago. You should check it out. -Mike

Not sure what the BBE AM-64 sounds like, hope it works out for you. Thanks for the tip on the SCXD...but I an going to wait for now.

With Christmas right around the corner, I want to save that money (already saved $320) just in case any unforeseen circumstance happens between now and Christmas. Also I want to have enough for a Blues Jr. When I do go in to buy, I plan on doing a side be side between the two amps. Right now based on Youtube clips, I am leaning towards the SCXD.

I've actually never heard or tried the blues jr. But I'm sure its an awesome amp. I like that it has a 12'' speaker. I just don't know how versatile it is, or how it takes to pedals. But it is a "true" tube amp so I'm sure the tone is just awesome.

I bought the scxd changed the tubes and use a 1x12 speaker cab. I really like the sound of a 12" speaker. I guess alot of people swap out the stock speaker with a Ragin Cajun. Seems like there a ton of modulation options with this amp.

Good luck with your purchase.

Check out the ModTone SpeedBox. Great distortion pedal for very reasonable price. There are a couple of youtube vids with some comparisons that include the Modtone.

I agree about the RAT. It's a few dollars more, but man does it rock. It's pretty versatile, too. The Boss DS-1 can be had for about 40 bucks anywhere, and it's truly a classic pedal. If you find that you don't care for the American Metal, and you're sticking to that price range, give the DS-1 a try.

I'm curious to hear what the RAT sounds like. I heard its a good pedal. I did test out the Boss DS-1 and liked it. However it sort of reminded me of my MT-2. I just wanted something a little different. But at least I know that its still a good cheap pedal.

I'll have to try the Rat out next time I'm at GC.

I don't own one, but as far as good and cheap, I have heard many good things about the Digitech Bad Monkey...maybe check one of those out too...

I have both the boss blues driver, which I use for blues, southern rock and classic hits and the black delta rock distortion which I use for hard rock. I like both pedals. They sound great in front of all my fender tube amps.

I can't say enough great things about
my MIJ BOSS HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal.

Don't be fooled by the Heavy Metal tag, as this
little bugger does a lot more than Metal, although
it can satisfy one's Metal needs quite nicely too.

It's the closest thing i've ever heard (or felt)
to a killer old Marshall JCM 800 in a stompbox
& the tastiest BOSS distortion EVER... by far.

They haven't made a dirt box before or since that has
anything close to the warmth of the HM-2's sweet spot.

I don't personally know how great the difference
is between the Japan & Taiwan versions, but the
Japanese ones are generally thought of as being
better by those that do... &, if you're patient, a
MIJ HM-2 can still be found for pretty cheap.

I lucked out & got my own '84
(in excellent condition) for $20.

Highly recommended.

I've heard many good things about this pedal. Thanks for the info. I'll keep my eyes open for one.

Ok, I tried the BBE AM-64 today and was pretty disappointed. I guess you actually do get what you pay for. This pedal just sounds dull and boring.

So I guess its time to look into some of the other suggestions from some of the other posts. I am willing to pay more for a better sounding pedal. I've learned my lesson.

.....and the hunt goes on

I like the Boss OS-2, because you can get overdrive and distortion. It kills two birds with one stone, and it is especially nice if your amp does not do great overdrive on its own.

I tried one of these pedals yesterday and really liked it. I still want to try out the "Bad Monkey" and Modtone Speedbox. The OS-2 is a lttle more than I wanted to spend but it just might be worth it.
