Bear with me here...this is quite lengthy :)

I have been posting msgs in other forums about a problem i have with my SCN pickups - lots of hum! Talking to the guitar shop he thinks its wired incorrectly and/or bad soldering - both equally plausible given my skill.

First thing is i cant find any diagrams for an SCN setup, previous posts have included pictures of noiseless setups but the SCN has THREE wires from each pickup, the pics only have 2 (including the fender american deluxe diagram).

So what i need to know is, the 2 additional wires per pup (6 in total), do they all get soldered to the volume pot, and if so, do they need to be in one big blob and/or in any particular order? If so thats a big bunch of wires, how best to solder such a beast? Or can i split it say into 3 of the same color and then 3 of the other etc...?

Also, whats my danger of shocking myself with incorrect setup (I havent touched the existing (ground?) wires that are already attached to the volume pot, i am just adding the new pups)

PLEASE don't take this sarcastically, but by the nature of your questions, I'd recommend you having these pickups professionally installed.

Question #1 ----------------------------
Yes, Green and Black wires are both ground wires and should be wired to ground.

Personally, I run all my ground wires together (including pot gound, cavity ground and bridge ground) to minimize ground loops.

If you are worried about a big lump of wires, you can join the green and black wires together to a single wire, then wire each single wires to the pot. Since you are wiring each green and black wire together, there should be almost no chance of a ground loop.

Question #2 ---------------------
The voltage that your pickups are producing are micro volts, and almost zero amps. Even in pouring down rain, standing knee deep in a swimming pool your pickups couldn't produce enough amps to hurt you. In other words, no amount of bad soldering under your pickguard will cause you personal harm.

Your amp, however, absolutely can kill you. Dangerous voltage can ONLY come out of the amp. Don't mess with amp wiring unless you know what you're doing.

well that makes sense thanks. can i just intertwine each black/green combination to make a single wire?

my issue is the volume pot in most diagrams is solid on the back so theres a large amount of space available to solder but mine is like a donut so i can only solder to the perimeter, of which 4 are already on there!

i notice as of 2004 the american deluxe has 3 wires per pup and are attached to a nice daisy wheel type of assembly, pity i dont have that, would make things much easier.

and to the previous poster who said i should seek professional help, i couldnt agree more...but i wont be defeated...yet

The other thing you can do is get a large Ring Terminal. Get one large enough to fit over the shaft of the vol or tone pot. You should be able to find one to fit 3 wires or more. Then stack them on top of each other.

What you don't want to do is solder the wires on to different pots. Not that it won't work, but it could introduce a bad hum from a ground loop.

See: Star Grounding Section

Ring terminal: not sure if this one is large enough, but this give you an idea of what a ring terminal looks like; just rip off the plastic.

This is my final post on this topic i promise.

I looked at the options posted previous and they look quite reasonable but for simplicity is there anything stopping me twisting all the wires together and soldering that, or even easier to twist the wires and run another single insulated wire between that and the pot (effectively running 6 wires into the one)?

Nothing stopping you. Running all 6 wires into one will work fine.
