There is no 'ordinary' CS 50s model that I'm aware of. If you mean the CS 54s, these are of the glassy, snappy, ilk vs the Fat 50s which have a bit more windings to enhance the low end.

No, I don't mean the CS 54s, but just to be clear, are you saying that what I understand to be called 'Fat 50s' and what's being talked about here as 'CS 50s' are one and the same? Thanks.

Apparently, yes.

to be honest, part of me is even wondering if one of the newer modeling Champs (e.g. SCXD) or G-DEC should be considered.

Good thread. Answered a lot of my questions too.

I'm guessing we're of roughly the same era and from what you say, I would really recommend against a G-Dec.

However, I absolutely love my SCXD – have been using the clean channel mostly, but have recently ventured a few knobs to the right and find I like some of the more subtle amp models, or 'voices', too.

Much as I'd like a '65 Deluxe Reverb, for a home player I really can't justify it as an 'upgrade' against this little thing. If you want to tinker, you can mod the speaker of course, but mine is stock so far. I think you might like it.

Very, very interesting topic and I just discovered it now!

That 1970 Fillmore sound is exactly what I'm looking after.

Ufboy, if you are reading this; have you discussed body weight when finalizing the spec of your MB Strat? Did TK give any advice in what direction you should take weight?

The thing is, I like a the feel of a light weight guitar, however I'm afraid that it will compromize sustain, mids, highs and attack. Since the Fillmore sound seems to have rather a lot of mids and highs, I'm a bit afraid a light weight body will not suffice to get this type of sound...

I have a set of Fat Fifties Custom Shops in one of my strats and I really like the full tone, plus, very importantly - they are noise cancelling in two and four switch positions. Some of those other CS pickups discussed are not noise cancelling.

As far as amps for the house, I just got an Egnater Tweaker head and I am currently pushing an Epiphone So. Cal. four by twelve cabinet with it to great effect. The Tweaker will let you go from clean to a ultra high gain Marshall tone. It has a few switches to change the amp voicings around, not digitally, but changes the circuits. It has a gain and a master control. It is a loud fifteen watts.

My fiance that I live with does not mind my amp wall adjacent to my stack of amps at bedside for playing us to sleep. She is great and lets me buy guitars without complaining, and actually encourages me to buy expensive guitars as opposed to cheap ones.

Another element of the early rock sounds was the strings. Mostly the only strings available were "pure nickel" which are still available.

I am also fond of Seymour Duncan pickups and am sure that you could find ones that would replicate the exact sound you want. Call them up and talk to a technician. They make "Antiquities" than might be appropriate, plus a lot of others like Alnico II Pro's.

I have a tweed HRDX with an alnico Jensen P12n speaker stock. This is an expensive special edition HRDX and sounds super great.

Also I would suggest trying out the sixty watt SuperSonic Fender with the Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. Very good at low volume and cranks up like a Marshall on the "Burn" setting. Very high gain capable.

The Egnater Tweaker is designed to be tweaked for a huge variety of tones. It would be definitely a great amp for anyone to check out for home or rehearsal use. They have the head and a combo with a Celestion twelve inch in it. Very moderately priced for an all tube outstanding, well recognized amp.
