I've just got a really well 're-crafted' relic'd Mexican Tele that's sooooooo nice in the hand – light and acoustically really resonant. It's a keeper, but the pups are lifeless.

What pups do you suggest for a chimey, smooth, musical sound – and NOT ear splitting and ice-picky in the highs.

I'm thinking Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah...

... does it get any better?

Based on your requirements which are similar to mine, I would use (and have used) a DiMarzio Twang King in the neck position and a Duncan Broadcaster in the bridge position with both pots rated at 250K.

You might want to check out DiMarzio's and Seymour Duncan's websites respectively and read through my choices and whatever other pickups which might interest you. Both sites have soundbytes for their pickups so you can hear them.

Martian,

Is the Duncan Broadcaster the STL-1B?

Like the sound of the Twang King.

Hypothetical question... if you chose your guitars by pickup first, then the guitar, which guitar would you put that pickup in? (I'll put up a thread on that one, it would be fun to see what comes back.)

Yes, the Duncan Broadcaster is the STL-1B.

I NEVER choose pickups to build a guitar around. To my way of thinking, it is preposterous to do so. I always choose the guitar first. If I like the feel and responsiveness of a given guitar for my genre, I can pretty much get it to sound like anything I want it to. Please don't take this as me being conceited, I'm just being frank.
