Hi,
I order Lace Sensors from two different dealers and they came in to totally different packages from seemingly different manufacturers.

A couple from 'Fender Lace Sensor' and a couple different ones from just 'Lace Sensor (Music Products)'.

What is the difference? and what brand of 'Lace' is better; Fender or Lace Music Products?

Thanks,

Rich

Other than maybe the age of each pickup, there isn't any difference. In the '80s, Lace was making their pickups only for Fender, so all Lace Sensors from that era will say "Fender Lace Sensor" on them. In the late '90s and thereafter, Fender gradually began to use them less and Lace began selling their pickups via their own distribution network. Today Fender still has Lace making some pickups for them, but it's very limited. So you will still see some newer Fender Lace Sensors. But the majority of Lace Sensors today are not sold through Fender, and those will just say "Lace Sensor" on them, or will otherwise have no reference to Fender on the pickup itself.

But a Gold Lace Sensor is the same as a Gold Fender Lace Sensor. Only the name has been changed...

I think it is all the same design. Don or Dan Lace was the guys name. He makes p.ups on his own now and has been for several years. When it was just Fender LS, there was only 4 options (gold, silver, blue, red). I think with just Lace there is like every color of the rainbow and Hot Golds. No matter what, they are great p.ups :D

That's right, it was Don Lace Sr. back in the mid-80s who designed the Lace Sensor. He passed away a number of years ago and since then the business has been run by Don Lace Jr. and Jeff Lace, who are both sons of the late Don Lace Sr.

I'm a huge fan of the Hot Gold Lace Sensors. Absolutely amazing pickups... I wish Fender would start using these in some new Strat models.

How do they compare to the FLS Blue or Red in Bridge position?

The Hot Gold bridge is probably closer to the Blue, but it's different in the focus of the mids. I call them "Sledgehammer Mids" because they have way more impact than the Red or Blue. And the Hot Gold has more high-end too, it's really a more balanced pickup.

I just put a kinman in the neck and compared it to a Blue, Gold, Hot Gold, and Standard Am Standard PU from '97. All neck positions. My ears are shot now, but will go back and listen this week...The Gold seems to cut through better than the Hot Gold, but SMark is right - the Hot Gold is more balance with a wider frequency range.

Another immediate finding - The Blue had to have a full treble setting. Very dark sounding without cranking all the way to treble...Could that be because I puy Bourn pots into that Stat?

What other pots would you recommend trying?

Thanks,

rd
