I 'fixed' my tremolo last night, but it was simpler than all of the posts I've read here, so I thought I'd chip in.

Loosen off the strings. Then, if you tighten the two screws that hold the the angled metal plate that holds the springs, there's no need for any other work.

Tightening the plate is the bit I've not seen mentioned.

With the angled plate almost tight against the body (I didn't screw it right up to the wood in case it made any subtle difference to resonance), the three standard springs are tensioned enough to flatten the bridge and hold it really firm... it's not going anywhere... in fact I can push the trem block back and hard and it won't budge. (Add two more springs if you really don't trust that.)

I didn't have to tighten the screws on the bridge claws and, I can't explain this, but the intonation was perfect except for the bottom E.

The action is obviously a little lower, but even this is okay (factory set-up must have been a bit high). In fact it amazed me what a subtle difference to the action makes... it just feels kind of 'looser' under the fingers – which is nice.

I was a little worried that adding a chunk of wood to stop the tremolo might affect resonance... obviously this is not a worry.

Hope this helps.
