Thinking about replacing my SCN pickups with S1 switching to Texas Specials in an American Deluxe Tele. still using the S1. Any comments or thoughts on this. Looking for the TWANG in Denver. Retfender.

You're going to have to change absolutely everything except the jack. You might want to rethink the idea. The 5 way switch is different than a standard switch and the pots are of a much higher resistance than stock. Popular favor has been falling away from the Texas Specials for some time now anyway. If you're bent on changing the pups I would suggest the CS Fat 50's instead. Even better yet, try the Kinman Woodstock with the solderless wiring kit since you have to replace everything anyway. It's a painless installation. Just bolt it in and play. Don't opt for the Woodstock "Plus" as the bridge pup may be hot but it's also extremely bright and harsh. Kinman makes some great pups.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

It might be more cost-effective to sell the Deluxe and buy another guitar.

You wont have to change anything except the s1 pot and the pickups. The deltatone pot and the megaswitch are perfectly usable with any set of pickups. The s1 wiring is all pretty much on the base of the s1 pot. You can wire to the lugs themselves ok, the s1 switch just wont do anything. All the pots are 250k same as all the old strats, the older deluxes used 1megs.

Since nobody's answered my thread (sob) can I hijack this one?

I was asking about taking the complete S-1 set-up and hooking it up to my Am Std pups and jack plate. There are some Am Deluxe S-1 wirings, pots etc on eBay, but I don't know if the Standard's pups are tonally suited to an S-1 set-up... so there may be nothing to gain from doing it.

I guess I'm looking to retain the ballsiness of the Std's pups (S-1 in the 'off' position) with the versatility of a Deluxe. Any views?

I think you'll struggle on that one mate. I've contemplated it for months now and got nowhere. Granted I know very little of guitar circuits other than following the drawing. The main problem I see is the two earth leads from the pickups, you need someway to replicate that. The tonality is no issue at all, that should work whatever the pickups. I myself like the blenderpot for versatility. The guitar never moves away from that fender tone but gets close to the s1 down in possitions 2&4. Also you get all 3 together without that 2 in parallel 1 in series with the special cap nonsense. If the soldering iron is ready and modding the guitar is nagging on your mind its the way i'd go first off. You only need some wire to do it.
Heres the schematic. I didnt even bother spending the £8 on the blender pot, a normal pot works fine but in reverse. Which I found helpfull to know where I was. You can have half neck vol and full bridge, half bridge vol and full neck (and variations of those by manipulating the blend pot), all 3 or neck and bridge telestyle. Put the blender on zero (or 10 depending on how you go with the pot) and your in regular strat territory.

If the guitar has a deltatone pot dont use it for the blender, use the normal pot. The one remaining tone pot becomes a master tone for all 3 pickups. So if you use the deltatone on that you'll have the best of both worlds.

Thanks nikininja.

The item on eBay is from the US – a company selling the whole set-up, taken from an American Deluxe and still assembled, for £61.00 BIN, but they've also got a couple on auction.

Anyway, I'm assuming I'd just swap everything apart from the pups and the jack plate.

That being the case, can you still see any difficulty?

I have an American Deluxe (but I'm obviously not going to strip that!), but I agree, positions 2 and 4 are the best things about the S-1. If the Standard turns out okay I'll sell the Deluxe, 'cos I don't think it's as ballsy as the Standard... and it's not white!

You've got to find a way of adding that 2nd earth wire from each pickup. If you get that solved then please tell me how. Also you can bet your going to get serious import charges on that £61, not to mention shipping costs. It may be worth trying the experiment with some lace pickups. I just cant fathom how to do it with standards. Ceri has a standard hss that has s1, I think. If thats the case he will likely have a wiring diagram that will show how its done on that guitar.

Oh heres the diagram on investigation.

Heres the switching options

Looks like I was very wrong about the extra wire from the scn's.
I'm sure you could adapt that to suit 3 x s/c's. I reckon the air may turn blue whist your negotiating it though.

Have had stuff from the US before, the duties are not too bad, but I guess if I really knew what I was doing it would be cheaper to buy all the parts here and assemble them myself.

Anyway, seems like it'll be more trouble than I can be bothered with just now – guess I'll just stick with the two guitars!

Thanks anyway, I'll keep the info. and let you know if I ever get 'round to it.

PS. The diagrams are for HSS, mine is SSS.

Yeah the hss standard strat is the only diagram I could find of regular pickups onto a S1. Scn pickups have 3 wires not 2 so the diagram for the deluxe is of no use to you. It does look complicated. If I were you I'd simply put the blender pot mod on my american standard and be done with it. Everyone I know who has tried it says its the best mod you can do to a strat. Its completely non invasive and costs nothing to do.

Simple, cheap and non-invasive sounds good.... but... what exactly is the blender pot mod?

PS/edit... I've Googled it thanks... sounds good - might do that.

have you checked ebay for "loaded pickgards".Might be easier to swap out the whole thing if you can find the setup you are looking for.

Yup. The same company has loaded ones for £212.00 plus import duties etc... makes it pretty expensive.

It seems that many of (us) SCN owners are considering the Texas Specials. I wonder why (honestly).

I've just ordered me a set of used Texas Specials just to try 'em out. For many out there, these coils are somewhat the holy grail of blues/rock. Will see.

I don't say that I don't like my SCN (like many other dissapointed players...still wonder why). But I feel that I'm close but not just there yet, to what I want my guitar to sound like.
