Which pups for a 60s Classic Strat that I just picked up cheap would give me an airy, chimey, almost acoustic, sound – with nice string separation. From what I've read on the forum I was thinking Seymour Duncan SSL-1's.

Second question... would I need to change anything other than swapping the pups? Capacitors etc.

You might want to try the Duncan APS-2 rather than the SSL-1. The term "Airy" is how I would describe it. Moreso than the SSL-1 IMO.

And no other changes are necessary in your Strat.

Custom Shop '69s would fill the bill-Excellent string separation and very acoustic-sounding. Be conscious of your EQ and your pup height with one-"Strat-itis" (a peculiar vibrating, almost octave-ish sound due to pups' magnetic pull) is a real issue with these-But there are some very sweet tones with tweaking and patience to be had. (I like a little higher output and am a Lace Sensor fan). Rumpelstiltskins have a great rep, and they can be built with non-staggered pole pieces, which are recommended if you want an even string sound.

Tonerider Surfari Set....You will not regret it.

I have Tex Mex, Texas Specials, Vintage Noiseless, 57/62 set,
but my strat fitted with the Tonerider Surfari Set is the one I keep picking up all the time.

What's wrong with the original(s) that aren't to your liking?

The 60s Classic Strats come with vintage style pickups, not sure on the exact specifications but I would guess they are similar to the Original 57/62 pickups (Just a guess). So I'm guessing you just want a step up from the stock vintage pups, if that's the case a used set of SSL-1s is a pretty good decision. I suggest used simply because if you just scored a deal on the guitar I couldn't see the logic in spending $200 on pups, kind of negates the deal. Just mah two cents anyway ^^

Thanks for the advice guys... I decided to send the guitar back. I've enough to keep me happy with my American Standard and Deluxe!

Hope you don't regret it. My Classic 60s (also 2nd hand) has become my fave Strat. It gets 3 times the use of my Highway Strat..

The only work I had done on it was a new Tusque nut and I removed a string tree. Other than that it's completely stock. I've thought about changing the p/ups (which I'm sure are ceramic magnet) many times, but I'm afraid of disrupting the mojo !!

Not surprised it's used more than a HWY 1!

Seriously though, the other thing I didn't like was the vintage frets and fretboard... one of the reasons I bought it was to compare with the medium jumbo's. So it served it's purpose and no regrets at all... made me realise that the Am Standard and Am Deluxe suit me best.
