Hi,
I am swapping the pickups out on an am standard strat and an am delux strat.

I have lace sensor golds (Claptons) in the standard now. How much different/better are the hot golds? Would swapping the neck position out (gold for hot gold) be better for nice bell-like cleans w/ nice breakup/crunch when dug into?

I'm also looking at the Kinmans and the lace sensor blue - silver - red combo. Any experience or thoughts on these. I do love the tone on siamese dream.

What about duncans that would take me towards that direction?

Other than that I am unfamiliar with what else I should look into. Any recommendations please??

My stock Fender PU's are too harsh sounding, and I think there might be better options than my Clapton golds (athough I do like them).

Thanks for any suggestions,

Rich

I much prefer the Hot Gold Lace Sensor to the original Gold. It's a more dynamic pickup. You can do more with it as you vary your pick attack, it has significantly more bottom-end than the original Gold, and it has a "singing" upper midrange that really makes overdriven tones particularly sweet. And you can really alter its personality by getting it right up next to the strings. Keep in mind that it's not actually a "Hot" or overwound pickup, as it's wound to the same DC resistance as the original Gold (5.8k to 6.0k.) But it does use stronger magnetics. You could make a bit of a comparison to vintage single coils in that the original Gold uses weaker magnetics like an early vintage single coil used alnico 3 magnets, and the Hot Gold uses stronger magnetics like the later vintage single coils used alnico 5 magnets. There's more to the Hot Gold than just the magnetics though. The design was tweaked quite a bit as well. But the result was a much better pickup IMO. Here's a recording I made a long time ago with my first set of 6k Hot Golds...

And of course, they do make an overwound (13.2k) Hot Gold Lace Sensor that is great for a fatter bridge pickup tone.

Great reply, and thanks for including the sound clip which helps a lot. Was that played on the neck position?

Anyone else have recommendations on any must have pickups?

Thanks!

From 26 seconds to 50 seconds it's all neck pickup, and from 2:32 to 3:22, and from 4:48 to 4:58 it's also all neck pickup.

Here's another hi-gain recording I made with my set of 6k Hot Gold Lace Sensors. Trying to make them sound kind of like Ritchie Blackmore. It's mostly bridge pickup, but I do switch to the neck pickup during the quiet section in the middle. It doesn't last long though... Then I also switch to the neck pickup during the build-up to the end... And then again just before the final chords.
