I make my own sets using a combination of Blue Steel and Flatwound from Dean Markley.

Not at all. Commonly Flatwound strings come in 11's, 12's, or 13's. I like 9's and 10's.
So I take the A, D, and G strings out of a Flatwound set and use them as the E, A, and D strings. Then I use the G, B, and e strings out of a Blue Steel set.

I like the feel of Flatwounds, and the tone is much fuller, less treble sounding.

D'Addario EXL120 .009-.042 nickel wound-regular light gauge.

I'm going to try some GHS Boomers - same size.

Once apon a time the only strings were Black Diamond, if your old enought to remember. I use Ernie Ball Slinky 10's and have for years, although I use to use fender 150's and flat wounds, you don't squeak with flat wounds when you go from chord to chord. But, the heavier the fuller it sounds. Acoustic guitar Elixer as of latley, and Martin Marquis.
12's are hard to play but boy do they sound good. SRV used to use heavy strings tuned down, so they were not so hard to play, they call that a baritone guitar now days. If you plug in a strat with Nines on it and then put some twelves on another one, you will completely notice the sonic difference. The nine's sound thin and the 12's sound full and lush.
I found that by using a heavier pick the heavier strings were a little more manageable. I still break tens and have lately considered going to 11's on my Les Paul.
