Absolutely. I put Texas Specials in my Affinity Squier and it sounds like a completely different (and much more expensive) guitar. :)

Check out http://store.guitarfetish.com/ for some nice inexpensive pickups.

On an Affinity Squier you may have to drill additional holes to fit a new pickguard, but they aren't collector's items so you shouldn't worry about that. My Affinity Strat came with an 8-hole pickguard, I've since replaced it.

Musician's friend has a good selection of pickguards in different price ranges.

If you don't feel like getting another pick guard you could always get a single coil-sized humbucker (rails...)

do the rail style give you the same sound as a standard humbuker?

They should...

you should read the reviews on places like harmony-central and musician's friend.

Good luck.

instead of a humbucker try hot rails on the bridge.. or go rails on 3.. and use 500k pots.. my suggestion is to try cool rails on the neck, vintage rails in the mid and hot on the bridge.. you can also have the option to go from series to parallel or the option to switch pickup combinations that can be found at seymour's website...

also other than duncans the dimarzios also offer hum cancelling strat pickups.. :D
