Hi everyone

Sorry if this has been answered before.

I've decided to make my own Gilmour strat, using a Mexican Classic 50s as the base. Now according to research and the custom shop version the best pickups to use are Fat 50s/CS 69/ SD SSL-5. The problem I have though is that Fat 50s and CS69s are sold as sets and not single pups. I simply can't afford to buy a set of Fat 50s and a set of CS69s just to use one pup from each, and I don't have the patience to wait for some on eBay :) . So I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good alternatives to those pups. Perhaps Seymour Duncans APS-2s or SSL-1s.

Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Neither Duncan pickups you've cited is an appropriate substitution for either Fender pickup you've cited. If you don't want to wait, try various related buy/sell/trade boards or be willing to pay a boutique pickup manufacturer such as but not limited to, Lindy Fralin or Peter Florence who specialize in Strat pickups to make them for you. Yet, you'll still have to wait. Presume the cost of one pickup each will cost you near the cost of a Fender set so you're kind of back where you started. Patience is a virtue! Good luck.

Try Copperhead pickups. Jeff winds them by hand and makes vintage-correct (all pickups same output, no RWRP mid) by default. His 1954s sound like what you're after. They currently run around $145/set.

There are lots of places to get inexpensive pickups that are still good. Try http://pickersparts.auctivacommerce.com for cheap ones, Copperheads, and rumpelpickups (my pickups are the latter).

Good luck!
