Hi All,

So.....I play Tele's pretty exclusively. Always in the neck position and am using mostly American Standard models replacing the stock PU's with the SCN Tele pickup sets.

I have an older mid 80's American Strat that I use ocassionally, it's loaded with noiseless hots. I would love to find a neck replacement (from any manufacturer) that closely emulates the tone of a Tele neck PU.

It would ideal if it was "noiseless" (but not humbucking), because of my rig components and where I use it.

Any suggestions would be fantastic!
Thank you,
James

Welcome!

In this context, "noiseless" means it is in fact, humbucking so I'll presume you require one in a Strat pickup's dimensions which emulates the one in your Tele.

Lower the height of your existing neck pickup in your Strat. This, and/or turn down the tone control a bit on the neck pickup. Either/or just may do the trick, I'm not kidding. If either/or doesn't work for you, let us know and we'll start throwing out some additional suggestions.

Thank you, that was a good suggestion. It did give the pickup a more Tele-like tone, but also shaved just a touch of acheiveable gain on the system I'm using.

This will actually be a good usable alternative for now and I would love any pick-up suggestions of a pre-made unit or, a Custom winder that could whip up a Strat neck pickup that would "direct replace" and give a nice slightly hairy Tele response (like the Fender SCN Tele neck pickup would)....with of course the noiseless performance.

Thank you for any advice as well!
Glad to be here,
James

You're quite welcome.

Ready made Strat humbucking pickups might be a bit tough for your requirements as all the aftermarket production pickups are geared to sound like some kind of particular Strat pickup rather than any kind of cross over to a Tele. To my ear and per my interpretation of your requirements, the closest you MIGHT get would be a DiMarzio 54 Pro. Or, as you say you liked my suggestion but you lost some gain in the process, try putting a bridge model SCN Strat pickup in the neck positon and do likewise with it.

In terms of custom winders, right off the bat, I'd say, Bill Lawrence as he is the one who designed the SCNs. He is currently in the process of moving his whole operation into the Lace facility. I don't know the details yet but the Lace website has the most up to date info as of this typing. There is contact information for Bill there. Now, premising Bill won't make any custom pickups, you might want to contact Seymour Duncan's Custom Shop. They have the means and the resources for hopefully nailing exactly what you are looking for.

I have noiseless SCN's in both my Deluxe's – Tele and Strat. The sound of the neck PU in the Tele is full and humbucker-ish, rather than chimey. I like it, but not sure if I like it more than a traditional 50's or 60's vintage type.
