Before i tear into my Squier, I would like to know if I need to look for LH pickups. Since the strings are mirrored, not flipped, does the orientation of the pickup matter? Will the body require more modifcation? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

There are pickups with right hand staggered pole pieces, left hand staggered pole pieces and non staggered pole pieces.
In order to put right hand staggered pole piece pickups in a left handed guitar more routing would have to be done to the pickup cavity in order to flip the pickups over so they appear to have left hand stagger.

Chet,

I think we are the only two lefties out here. LOL. Thanks for your help. If it goes well, I may try to upgrade the pickups on my MIM Strat next. I will also try to document it with some pics for other lefties.

4 leftys and counting, I have a squier with lace sensors, I really didn´t have to do anything weird to install them and sounds great, I don´t think put them backwards will make a big change in the sound

I'm a lefty who plays righty, do I count?

What essentially makes a pickup either left or right handed is in the construction shape of the base (bottom) of the pickup. There's no electronic or magnetic process which makes such a differentiation. Oversimplified, let's talk righty pickup in Strats and Teles for example. The base of the pickup is 'V' shaped in a committed direction toward the bridge. This committed 'V' is also routed into the body of the guitar to accomodate the pickup ONLY in that one, same direction. However, many of these so called, "right handed" pickups can be reverse mounted on and in a guitar and will function flawlessly for the lefty if the body's pickup routings are larger than just that snug 'V' fit. Further, for all outward appearances, these reverse mounted pickups will then look like "left handed" pickups and function perfectly for the lefty as even a pickup with staggered polepieces are now correct for the lefty.

Many pickup manufacturers nowadays are making their Strat and Tele pickups without that 'V' base shape in order to make their pickups "ambidextrous". The top of the pickup and the base are essentially, the same shape. So, the guitar's pickup routs are no longer a factor at all. Also of note is the fact that many guitar manufacturers are now making oversized body routs to accomodate other than stock pickups as well.

The bottom line: You have infinitely more choices than you realize.

It's been a while since I've been back to this post. I did get a set of LH noiseless pickups and the pots. The sound is definitely better, and the experience was valuable. My initial concern was with the pole heights. I could not figure out exactly why they are different heights, and if that would have anything to do with the orientation. I didn't even think of trying Lace pickups or anything like that. That is a good idea I will file away for next time.

Thanks for all your help, I really enjoy this forum.

Now that all the lefties are exposed, can we get together and pressure Fender for a LH Jazzmaster?

Tom
