I play Blues style music and considering swappping out Hot Noiseless pick-ups for Mayer's Big Dippers on my Jeff Beck Sig Strat - any thoughts on tone loss and gain from change?

Thanks.

This is merely IMO, YMMV.

In generalities:

The negatives:

Your guitar will no longer be humbucking.
You will notice a volume drop.
You will not have any appreciable midrange.
The polepiece heights will give you uneven string response.
You will have less sustain.
They are grossly overpriced if you can find a set.

The positives:

The highs and lows will be more pronounced.
The pickups have a very transparent 'report' so the nuances of your technique, meaning, string separation, your picking and the dexterity of your played passages will all be magnified for better or for worse.
Your tone in general will sound more 'musical' and less 'fizzy' due to the Alnico magnets.
Very close to the BDs are the CS69s with the CS69s being slightly more powerful.
Both the BD and HN sets are currently in demand so you should be able to unload either of them for a reasonably good price.

That's all the chief points I can think of at the moment.

Thanks for the valued feedback and time.- appreciate it!! I was able to pick-up a loaded BD pickup assembly for $300 from a new Mayer Strat, so not pricey.

What's your thoughts/differences on Big Dipper versus Eric Johnson p/u's?

Ahhhh... the never ending search for tone :-)

You're quite welcome and congrats!

Like I said above, the BDs are merely a weaker version of the CS69s. In either's case, the midrange is virtually non-existent. The BDs will be smoother all around as the high end won't be as piercing and the lows won't be as percussive in comparison to the CS69s.

I found the EJ pickups to be quite nondescript as they are too weak to have any singular qualities whatsoever. For those among us whom like EJ, use more tone shaping pedals than can be found at Musician's Friend's warehouse and claim they can discern distinct tonalities in varying brands' battery voltage, these pickups are the way to go.

As always, this is merely IMO, YMMV.
