I just bought a new set of these pickups and am waiting for them to arrive, then read online the disappointing news that these new pickups are likely machine-wound (not hand wound) and only initialed by A.Y.

IS THIS TRUE?

If so - does anyone know when she stopped making the CS 69's and started only writing on them?

As far as i'm aware the Ybarra 69's were a limited edition pickup nicknamed Abby's. They fetch in the region of $350 and upwards these days when you can find them. I saw some a couple of weeks ago sell at $693.

A very inflated price for a bit of wire wrapped by some old bird.

Almost $700 for some pickups!! That's nuts!!

Thanks for the info, Ninja. I agree with your take on it, especially when I doubt that most people (myself included) can hear the difference between the Abby's and the stock CS 69's.
My reason for asking was b/c the ebay listings out there say the pickups are "created & initialed by her..." then a little online research reveals that Abby just checks & initials them. The advertising for these p'ups is very misleading.

Also, note that a few sets have been "faked" with some initials that don't even come close to Abby's writing....so proceed with caution!

If you look at the product listing on this very website for the CS 69's, it says they are "created, dated, and initialed" by Abigail. So the language on ebay is more or less Fender's.

initialed = handwounding supervised by Abby; if handwound by her, they are signed.

Exactly. Initialed "AY" means she supervised the machine winding of the pickups. Signed "Abby" means she hand wound each pickup herself.

Here is a picture of one of my Hand Wound Abby sets...
