I have just completed my latest build. It’s my first dual humbucker configuration with a Seymour Duncan ’59 SH1 in the neck position and a Fender DH-1 in the bridge position. The switching is an S1 arrangement with all 500k pots. The problem I have is that the SH1 pickup has less output than the DH-1 and is quite noticeable when switching through the various output combinations. I have tried adjusting the SH1 as close to the strings (without interference) as possible and have lowered the DH-1 level with the pickguard without resolving the difference in outputs.

My thinking at this point is I need to replace the SH1 pickup with something a little more compatible with the DH-1 pickup. Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about fixing this?

Thanks for looking.

The closest Duncans in terms of similar tonality but increased power to the SH-1 are the Duncan Custom 5 (SH-14) and the Duncan Custom (SH-5) in this order. The only difference between the two is, the SH-14 uses an Alnico V magnet and the SH-5 uses a ceramic one.

Thank you for the information. I will start looking for information on a SH-14. I will post again when I have got more information to add to this thread.

Thanks again

To catch up on this thread: I looked at the Duncan SH-14 and SH-5 specifications and they are both recommended for the bridge position. I started thinking (bad move on my part) the black DH-1 currently in the bridge position has marginal string spacing for the bridge position (I’m using it with a wilkinson tremolo bridge) I made that comment to the ebay seller when I received the pickup. I remembered that I also have a white DH-1 pickup that was slated for an upcoming build to be used in the bridge position. So I removed the Duncan SH-1 pickup from the neck position and moved the black DH-1 from the bridge to the neck position and installed the white DH-1 in the bridge position. I'll keep an eye out to buy another black DH-1 pickup and then swap it out with the white one.

The outputs are now much more closely matched. In have learned a lesson and will try to match pickup outputs for any future builds even if it means only purchasing pickups as a set.

Thanks again for your inputs.
