I want to ask, since I am going to have a new neck pickup and bridge pickup, and my neck pickup is based on a mid-'60s sound with AlNiCo V in it.

I am thinking about getting a bridge pickup with an AlNiCo III magnet in it, with plain enamel wire and a black fiber bobbin.

Will it sound good in comparison/will the transition be smooth?

Thanks.

Your handle, "hendrixfan99" implies you prefer mid to late 60s tonality. Having said this, what you are proposing for the same guitar is a neck pickup 'tuned' for a mid-60s sound whereas putting an Alnico III pickup in the bridge is 'tuning' it for a mid-50s sound.

As you already know, the 60s 'tuned' pickup is percussive and has a nice, crisp presence. Using an Alnico III pickup in comparison gives you a spongier bass, more midrange, less presence, slightly rolled off highs and maybe a hair more sustain. In other words this combination will yield, "sparkle" vs. "sweet". Note that the weaker the Alnico magnet's strength, the closer it can be brought to the strings without incurring, "Stratitis".

I personally don't like mixing magnets among pickups in the same guitar as you will find yourself constantly tweaking the amp where ultimately, one pickup has to be favored over the other as neither will achieve their optimum potential with the same amp setting. Of note is the fact that fiddling with the guitar's controls and pickup heights can make a 60s 'tuned' pickup respond like a 50s 'tuned' one but not the other way around.

As always, this is merely my opinion, YMMV.
