In the new Fender catalog I read:
http://www.fender.com/resources/catalogs.php

American Standard Stratocaster (page 57)
"alnico V pickups"

Squier Classic Vibe Stratocaster '60s (page 87)
"The tone is thick with a custom set of AlNiCo V single-coil pickups"

So my question is, does this mean that there's a $350 Squier with the same
pickups as an $1200 American Standard? Or do those capital "A" and "N"
just mark it as a completely different model pickup?

Thanks for any info

"Alnico V" is a type of metal (the "V" is roman numeral for 5).

There are probably very different pickups, but both have magnets made of Alnico 5, a specific alloy of aluminum, nickel and cobalt (Al-Ni-Co) with other metals.

SlapChop is right, except you can remove the word "probably" from his post. About the only thing these pickups have in common is the source magnets. The pickups in your Squier and an Am Std are completely different.

The Am Std pickups have 6 alnico rod magnets going straight through the coils.

The Squier has 6 steel slugs in the coils and ceramic or alnico bar magnets underneath the coils. Very different.

The Squier actually sounds quite good until you turn it up loud.

My Squier Classic Vibe 60s pickups don't have bar magnets. Here is a pic.

I'm pretty sure the less expensive line of Squiers still use bar magnets. These Classic Vibe pickups sound great.

I USE FENDER SQUIRE CV TELECASTERS AND THEY SOUND GREAT AT ANY VOLUME AND NO BAR MAGNETS ON THE PICKUPS. THESE CRAFTED IN CHINA GUITARS ARE AMAZING AND WELL PRICED. WHY ARE GUITAR PLAYERS SO AFRAID TO PLAY A GOOD SQUIRE? WHEN I PLAY THESE GUIATRS I MAKE THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING NOT THE LETTING ON THE HEADSTOCK. I FEEL CV TELES ARE BETTER THAN THE MEXICAN TELES. ARE THE ALNICO V PICKUPS SAME AS THE AMERICAN TELES? IF FENDER THEMSELVES USE THE SAME PICKUP DESCRIPTION THEN I WOULD SAY "YES" THEY ARE. GO OUT AND BUY THE SQUIRE CV CUSTOM TELE SUNBURST WITH ALNICO V PICKUPS STARTING AT $379.95 YOU CAN GET ONE FOR $341 ON MUSICIANS FRIEND. JUST ASK FOR THE 10% OFF. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
