I just bought a used 2003 Fender MIM. I am looking for pickups that get me a good classic Hendrix sound. The guy at a local guitar shop suggested CS54 pup. IS this good or CS69 pup would be better? Or are there any other opinions as pickups go? :?

I don't know if there are mid-'60s CS pickups sold separately from the guitars, but those would be the ones if you're thinking of Hendrix' studio sounds. Something with a low output to match the characteristics of the '65 strats he used most often. He didn't live much past 1969, so that year is better to get the Hendrix look rather than the sound, if that makes sense. Your advice concerning the '54 pickups is probably good, and I'd say that lower output would have been the reason that it was offered.

Wade through this and you'll find a pretty exhaustive treatment of the topic!

P.S. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks so much for your input. I actually pickuped up the CS54 pups when I sold back my acoustic so I did not get hit in the wallet for those guys. A local guitar tutor suggested me to put in a YJM bridge pup. IS there any opinion on the sound for a YJM #2 at the bridge and CS54 for the middle and neck? Any idea as far as effects? I was advised on bad horsie. Any opinion?

The Fender CS 69s are the type of pickups he would have used in most of his Strats but I guess the point is pretty much moot now. In terms of DiMarzios, it would be the Area 67, not the YJMs which are more 70s Strat.

As to pedals, I'm clueless.

Well if you want the Hendrix sound either the Jimi FuzzFace or the reissue Dallas FuzzFace is what you will need. I personally prefer the reissue since Hendrix used it before Band of Gipsies, so you get the "Purple Haze" fuzz. As far as Wah's go after owning a few I found that having the GCB-95F and the signature Hendrix wah the best two options. If you want a truly unique Hendrix sounding wah with a great low end especially on a strat the Hendrix signature is your best bet.
But to get the true Hendrix sound you would have to dish out thousands of dollars and buy the R.M. custom pedals from London. Just get the Dallas and the sig. wah and you will be Hazing all day long.

Sounds like Ishould exchange the cs54 pups for the cs69pups and put a Dimazio area 67 on the bridge. Get the dallas fuzzface and sig wah.
Thank you all for your input as I am serious about all suggestions.

Today, I exchanged the cs54pup for cs69 pups and also got the the Damarzio area 67 pup. I will get in the the mail in 5 to 10 business days.
Something tells me I should consider putting the area 67 on the middle or nec if I could . Not sure what to do. I got all the pups at Guitar Center. I was also told at Sam Ash that I should be in the market for an amp first before effects. I was suggested VOXX as an amp by the counter person and also a random guy playing a guitar in the store for the sound I am looking for.

For a more Hendrix like tone any amp (tube, preferably) with a British voicing would work. Marshall and Vox are the main ones that come to mind.

A bit of clarification:

The CS69s are surely the set you would want if you're looking to possess the identical type of pickups which would have been in the Strats Hendrix predominantly used and naturally, were OEM in the 'new' Strats of the late 60s. The Area 67s on the other hand are stacked humbuckers designed to emulate the CS69 (era) pickups. So, your are essentially mixing and matching the same pickup, single coil vs. HB. Consequently, whichever pickup you solo the most off of is where I'd put the Area 67.

As to amp vs. pedal, I agree, amp. However, instead of laying out megabucks for the Vox, you can get a much more reasonably priced Fender tube amp, throw a Celestion in it and you'll achieve the sound that way.

I read somewhere that Hendrix played a right handed Strat reversed and never did change the pickups around, so he had the pole pieces that would have covered the heavier strings under his lighter strings.

CS 69s will get you in the ballpark.

Yep, Hendrix merely strung righty Strats lefty and hand bend the tremolo arms straight, removing the bend between the tip and before the second bend where it screwed into the block.

On first thought, I was going to put the area 67 in the middle. But my guitar tutor said alot advanced guitarist do not use the middle pickup and some just take them out. So, I am still getting other opinions and feedback as that goes. As far as the fender amp plus the celestion, I will look in to that first.
