Hey everyone, I'm Ryan, I'm kind of new to the Forum, but I've been playing for the past 16 or so of my 22 years. I'm currently an Active Duty Marine, but I'm about to get out in about a month and start college with a Major in Music.

I'm a die hard Strat player, and I own several. (Custom Relics, a '62 Reissue MIJ, and I'm looking into a Roadworn.) So I'm pretty particular on my guitar tone, I'm one of those obsessive tone freaks when it comes to my guitar sound... and I've had this idea rolling around in my head for a little while, but I'm not sure how to go about getting it pickup-wise.

Like I had said, I'm looking into a Oly 60's Roadworn Strat to be my main gigging guitar (since I have about 3g's in my Custom Relic, and as much as she's my baby, and as much as I love playing her, I don't exactly trust taking her out to every gig.) I have several different CS pickups installed in my strats (Fat 50's in my Relic, and Texas Specials in my MIJ) and I LOVE the sounds I can get from the Fat 50's in my Relic, but I've been getting into more of the rolled off tone sound that John Mayer goes for at times. (If you want a good example of the sound I'm talking about listen to the intro to "I Don't Trust Myself With Loveing You" from his Where The Light Is cd or dvd. I just think it's a very versitile sound. I know that JM has his own custom voiced "Big Dipper" pups which he gets a lot of his tone from. I play quite a few different styles of music from classic blues to classic rock, jazz, and newer rock... and I can get most of those tones from my Fat 50's...

So I've been trying to figure how I can mix the qualities of the Fat 50's as well as the Big Dippers... I know that JM had a lot of the mids reduced in his pickups... so does anyone have any ideas on any mods or mods/pickup combos that would get me a good blend of the two??

Sorry for the long post btw... I just thought I'd introduce myself a little while I was at it.

Welcome to the forum!

I know what you mean, you'd like that scooped sound but without losing the vintage chime sounds.

I've heard a rumor about some new scooped pups that might be introduced at the NAMM show next month. Maybe Big Dipper style?

Welcome, Ryan!

Fender's CS 69 pickups have scooped mids. IMO, they are pretty much what you are describing. Check into them as they just might be what you are looking for. If not, you can always hope the NAMM rumor pans out.
