I'm interested in some suggestions for pickups to upgrade my 2008 MIM Standard HSS Strat.

I'm looking for a change because while I do think the stock ceramic pickups sound pretty decent, I really like true single coil Alnicos better...better clarity, different sound with varied pick attack (stocks sound more or less the same regardless of attack), more pronounced kick, thump and quack or whatever you want to call it.

I play mainly classic and hard rock (Cream, Zeppelin, Hendrix etc... all the way up to Wolfmother) through a Super Champ XD, and am looking for something vintage-based that will provide a good clean tone but can handle some overdrive/distortion (not metal though) from time to time.

I currently have a second Strat with Texas Specials and while I do like them a lot, wanted something different for more versatility. I was thinking about a Seymour Duncan SSL-1 in the neck and middle positions, and a Pearly Gates humbucker in the bridge. The added bonus is I can buy the SSL-1's as singles...unlike a lot of other brands.

Do you think that will get me what I am after?

Any problem using Alnico V single coils and an Alnico II humbucker?

Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

i have seen a nice pu combi on cs strats in a guitar mag:

1. neck cs 69, middle fat 50, bridge texas special
2. neck and middle fat 50, bridge SD JB SH-4

the tester was very pleased with, the fat 50 in the middle very usefull. if these combis sounds good on all strats i don't know and it's a tast-question.

a good combi can be also neck cs 69, middle fat 50, bridge SD JB SH-4, that's my faves.

cheers
:D
