Attenuator today. A marshall powerbreak. Great unit, even improved my blues junior's tone a bit.

Anyhow i've read that you should only use speaker cable with them, not guitar cable. Its not a problem as i have miles of the stuff lying around.
Can someone explain to me why its imprortant? Is it to do with not increasing resistance on the output section of the amp?

Quoting another forum :shock:

Quote:
Just to give you the figures,
Power = Current^2 * Resistance
So for a 100 Watt amp into 8 Ohm cabs
100 = Current^2 * 8
12.5 = Current^2
sqrt(12.5) = Current
3.6 Amps = Current
Guitar Cables *WILL NOT* handle 3.6 Amps!
Aways use speaker cables for speakers!
If you make your own up, use cable that can handle the current (not 3 Amp cable)
(^2 means "squared")

An instrument cable will get very warm when used as a speaker cable - so make sure that you correctly label speaker cables, so that you won't loose one in a pile of instrument cables.

Here's an article written by the folks at sweetwater.com - it's well written.

I don't know if you would burn down your house, but you could ruin your amp if you try pushing too much power through the skinny little wire running down the center of a guitar cable.

Get some big copper man!

Man them jcm800's are screamers. The Kerry King model has KT88/6550 valves and roars wild. Without the stupid circuit engaged its really warm and goes from mild plexi like to Iommi's most crushing. Man why did i ever put this thing away???

It really helps! The weight of those heads isn't exactly well-balanced, you know.

Ok, here's a little review I'll write about the Weber MiniMass 25W I got yesterday.

First of all, the rig I tested with:

79 Strat->Mr Springgy Reverb->Fender Champ Tweed (volume: 10 of 12)->3ft, 12 gauge speaker cable->Weber MiniMass 25W->10ft, 12 gauge speaker cable->Marshall JCM800 1960A 4x12 cab

(I am soon to replace the 10ft cable with one equal or less than 3ft).

Pros: It does the job as described, able to bring the volume way down while getting the nice breakup sound of hot tubes. It got rid of most of the buzz I was getting with my setup. The unit requires no power adapter.

Cons: It loses some of the sound definition. I had a big bassy bottom that was shaking the walls and I seem to have lost most of it. However, the highs are acceptable on the +3db treble setting.

Also note that I cannot really use my Tube Screamers anymore, I now get plenty of overdrive as is.

Now I realize that I've only tried it for a short period of time and I need some tweaking. Maybe I need to invest into an equalizer too. I am trying to remain objective.

Hope this review helps someone. Has anyone had experience with this attenuator? I'd be curious of the findings...

Try running at lower than maximum volume and less attenuation. Valves break up at the 6-8 mark. It will tweak out. Weber are the only attenuator manufacturer that i havent heard tone loss reports on. The wall shaking bass could be due to using the amp at lower volumes too. My marshalls lose high end when the volumes high the blues jr gains treble at higher volumes.

I Used to play with the amp between 5 and 6. With the attenuator, I had the amp at 10 out of 12.

I think now being less loud, the speaker physically moves less air and travels less and therefore incures a loss of low frequencies.

Curiously, I dont seem to have issue with treble loss as some have reported.

Will play with settings tonight when I get home again. My simple circuit amp does not have a tone knob so I have a feeling I may need an EQ pedal, can anyone recommend a good one?
