Hi there,

I want to achieve hum canceling for the Custom 69 PUs in the Classic Player 60s strat for the in-between positions. For that, I intend to replace the original middle PU with a Suhr V60.

The Suhr V60 middle PUs have south polarity and are wound counter clockwise - so I would need the Custom 69's neck and bridge PUs to have north polarity and be wound clockwise to get RWRP.

Now, I found on a website that the Custom 69's have north polarity which is great...but are they wound clockwise or not :?:

Thanks very much! :D

Have you purchased the Suhr pickup yet? If not, you can save some money by changing the magnetic polarity of the middle CS69 pickup yourself. Consult the earth magnets at Stew-Mac. Change the polarity and reverse the leads and you have your RWRP set up.

Also, check out this older thread for some info ... that the winding direction doesn't matter.

Hey thanks for the input!

Has someone tried this with the 69s? If what you say is true I only would need two strong magnet to change the polarity and then swap the wires (or let my guitar shop do that).

But I've read that the problem with switching the wires is that the magnets are neither completely insulated nor connected to the ground in Fender's case meaning the PUs will become hot and get shorted.

Does anyone have experience with that?

Thnx!

The Alnico pole pieces sold by Stew-Mac come uncharged. They give these instructions on how to charge the magnets, but the same procedure can be used to flip the polarity. Scroll down at that page for details, scroll up to see their magnets.

That problem you mention does not exist. The pickup's "signal" is AC, so it's flowing both directions alternately. No way anything will get hot or shorted just by switching the leads. Switching the leads and reversing the magnetic polarity is how Fender makes RWRP middle pickups.

You could change the polarity with stronger magnets but you would not be able to verify afterward the strength of the magnetic pull from the polepieces in general nor among themselves being equal.

The coil wire is insulated and wrapped directly around the magnetic polepieces. Heat usually is not the factor for the pickup's breakdown. Rather, corrosion and abuse are.
