I am new to this website and can not say that I have ever posted anything on a forum so hopefully this works.

I just recently bought a Fender Road Worn 50's Stratocaster. I love the feel, sound and look. I play it through a fender hot rod deluxe amp, I think it's called.

I am wondering what new pick ups to put into it to make is sound even better. I play rock and blues mainly and would like to know what if any of you guys have put different pick ups into the same/or similar guitar and how they like it and how it sounds now. Thanks a lot.

msplit90,

First of all welcome to the forum. Secondly, thats a tough question to answer. Is there something specific that you don't like about the stock pickups? That guitar has got tex mex pickups. Some people really love them, while others dislike them. I don't have enough experience with them to have developed a strong opinon. However I do know that if you play around with the settings on your amp (terrific amp by the way) you can find some great sounds with just about any pickup out there. If you are really set on changing the pickups I can recommend the Fender Custon Shop line. They're all very nice but I think I like the CS '69s the best. The Dimarzio Area Series are also sweet sounding pickups if you want to go noiseless. I also like the Fender SCNs (also noiseless) but there are many that don't. On my Strat I have a set of Copperhead 59's installed that I absolutely love. They have a more vintage sound. There's alot of choices out there so the best thing to do is try out as many as you can. YouTube can also be a valuable resource where you can listen to different pickups but beware that recordings can be somewhat deceiving. My best advice is to keep the pickups you got and work with them for awhile before you decide to change so that you know exactly what you are looking for. It took me about 10 years before I got new ones. Hope that helps some.

Since it's a '50s Strat you could see if you like Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s. Really anything on from the Fender Custom Shop would be good, depending on your tastes. Personally my favorite are the Texas Specials. You can search youtube for videos featuring pickups your interested in. That can help with your decision since guitar stores don't always have a range of aftermarket pickups already equipped in a guitar for you to try out.

The best thing to do would be to unplug the guitar from the Hot Rod Deluxe and plug it into another amp. You will experience an immediate improvement in tone. :D

If you put Fender's Original '57/'62 pickups, you'd have a sweet vintagey sounding guitar!

My choice would be the Fat 50s. They cover rock AND blues well.

Man, I was ripping away on my MIM Std with Tex Mex pups today. Are you sure you want to pull them out? As for me, I have really bonded with mine ... but that is just me. Great pups IMHO...

Firstly....change your preamp valves to 12at7 instead of the 12atx's that come with it....its a disgusting amp off the shelf. Then throw your pickups in the bin and buy ANY boutique vintage type pickups you can afford. Sadly all modern fender pickups sound nothing like the days of old...example...the 57~62 pickups....the pickups wound in 57 were WAY different to the p/ups wound in 62. Polarity is different, wire was different and the directiojn of winds was different.....how can you market one piskups to cover 5 years of difference?? Sliders pickups in Sydney Australia are about the best you an buy for the $...AVOID KINMANS at all costs....and if your broke....try GFS as a last resort. If your rich then go for Fralins or Duncans.
I woudl suggest that you change your valves FIRST, USE THE KNOBS on your guitar and amp.....and TEST WHAT YOU HAVE AGAIN.....then make a choice.

If you want something that sounds really vintage and clear, try the 57/62s. If you want a little more tone and umph... try the Fat 50s. Either set would be nice.

But what exactly is "better" to you? Where do you feel your pickups fail at?

Not sure if you made change already, but I play blues and have played around with many p/u configs and manufacturers. I would pull those Tex Mex p/u's- not a fan, good for entry level players IMO. I would give a look at:

1. Neck: CS 69, Middle CS Fat 50 and Bridge CS Texas Special (you can often buy these on ebay from differnt sellers for about $50-100 each pending your patience.

2. CS 69's - I like better than Texas Specials (I have a set I could sell of TS) - 69's maybe the best Fender aftermarket pick-up set IMO.

3. Lindy Fralin Pick-ups - Very Good

4. Forgot, I have Big Dippers in one axe and they are nice, close to the 69's . Have to purchase on E-bay adn pricey (I could sell a Neck Big Dipper p/u).

Thats my .02

P.S. As you know, your guitar pick-ups are important, but guitar tone and volume knob settings (Isee so many people always just put all knobs on guitar at ten) amp settings, pedals used (I'm a pedal junkie and love them - spend the $$ on a good OD pedal) and of course the players feel/hands, pick or no pick dictate sound.

Have Tone Fun!!!

My stylings are pretty much the same as your's. For single coils, I use Duncan SSL-2s in the neck and middle positions and a Duncan SSL-6 in the bridge position.

HI, this is my first post too. I also bought the same guitar a few days ago, and I agree about the pickups. I actually traded my 1988 American Standard for this guitar, as I always wanted a vintage strat, but I will never be able to afford one. But I admit the A.S. was more of a "players" guitar.
Nonetheless, I like the Roadworn. I don't play too much anymore anyways. But yeah, I prefered the sound of my A.S. pickups. Anybody know what would have been in there? All I ever use is the neck position anyways. Also, this guitar seems to buzz worse than the A.S. Any ideas? And being the poseur I am, could I get a different pick up and put it into that relicky looking plastic case?
Also, ANy thoughts about that old style floating bridge? I had my A.S. bridge just pegged right down.
And finally, what is the deal with that single color pick guard? I know that was the original color, but it seems like the material is very soft, like vinyl. Man, it sure looks great though, and it plays pretty well. Maybe I am just not used to the Tex Mex pups.....
I have though about going back to the shop and getting my A.S. back, or maybe get the 60s tele. It has that chrome case on the neck pup, so I presume you could do anything in there..but I would miss the whammy bar, and I like the STrat style.
Thanks for listening.
PS anybody like that blues junior relic amp? Im thinking of trading my 80s Super Champ. Am I nuts? And does Fender sell a relicked tweed guitar case?
