I have two strats with vintage trems, but recently saw a '97 strat with a standard trem which resembles my Wilkinson (which I like a lot better then the vintage trems). Are there any major differences b/t the vintage and standard that I need to be aware of? Also, can they be easily switched?

Thanks in advance.

I've used both extensively and have had no significant problems with either.

The primary reasoning for the change to the Wilkinson is that it offers less resistance and more reliability during use than the vintage and the Wilkinson saddles sustain the strings a bit longer than the vintage.

Neither is a direct replacement for the other and any change over should be done professionally or by someone who otherwise has experience in the pertinent areas.

I've never seen a vintage style trem eat into its pivot posts. I have seen it a few times on fender 2 point (modern) trems though. I'm thinking of using black springs on my vintage trem maybe get the tension down a bit. Any thoughts anyone?

I would think that the modern tremolo with its focal point for wear in EXACTLY the same two places over and over again on somewhat, a "pot metal" would have to wear down, even with moderate use.

With the vintage tremolo, you'd accomplish the same thing if you slightly reduced the pulling tension of the claw or, removed an existing spring and then slightly tightened the pulling tension of the the claw. There's no need for the black springs (which fatigue easier) and having to set the tremolo up all over again for them.
