I have an original '70s-vintage Dimarzio Super Distortion humbucker. It has three wires only (red, black, and white).
a) How do I wire this thing up?
b) Can this be coil tapped?
c) How do these colors - in terms of wiring - compare to a modern Dimarzio humbuckers with red, black, white, and green wiring?

PLEASE HELP!

a) It is essentially the same as the modern ones. The only difference is the pickup's phasing cannot be reversed (no green wire to reverse with the red). Consequently, red is always your 'hot' wire; the black and white wires are the coils' link.

Specifically, the red (hot) wire and the black (negative) wire are the leads of one coil and the white (hot) and the *braid (negative) are the leads from the other coil.

*Eventually, DiMarzio realized that many people were having phasing problems while combining their pickups with those of other manufacturers. So, they ceased soldering the negative lead to the base and braided shield wire of the pickup. Instead, it became the green wire.

b) Yes.

c) See a).

Any questions, just yell!

Thanks, Martian. I have appreciated your deep and thoughtful pickup knowledge for quite a while now.
