hello. i have a fender strat, it's about 10 years old. i want to take off the tremolo and put a fixed bridge on. i see fender has a American Series Stratocaster® Hardtail Bridge Assembly part #0058420000 on their accessories area. is this all that need to get in order to switch over from a tremolo to a hardtail?

any advice is appreciated. thanks.

If your Strat has a tremolo, the only way to convert it to a hardtail is by "blocking" the tremolo by inserting a piece of wood in the tremolo cavity to clamp the tremolo block down. Strats with trems have wood routed out for the tremolo system, so a hardtail bridge would have nothing to attach to.

On my drummer's MIM strat we used a Pulse 5A U.S. Hickory. We cut it down, and it fit perfectly. Added tons of sustain, and the thing has no more tuning issues.

There are other options, there are trem-setters, Stew-Mac I think and Fender might make their own version...which inserts a lockable bar type mechanism in place of the middle spring. The nice thing about those is that they are adjustable so that you can switch the trem on and off easily. The next option is to buy two more springs (making 5 total) and tighten the heck out of it. This will do the job in most cases.

I really like the way the drumstick method turned out though, it's kinda old school.

As far as moving to a hardtail bridge, the problem with that would be that now you have a hollow guitar...and not in the good way. (ie: no trem block). You could also just get a Hardtail Strat...the Robert Cray Sig. is a pretty sweet axe.
