Hello All,

I was thinking of changing the black pickguard of an American Deluxe Strat to a white pickguard. However the pup covers are also black and I would like to change those covers as well. I have searched the forum but cannot find a definitive answer. Some say yes, some say not without damaging the pup. Does anyone with the SCN pickup know for certain whether or not this can be done? I will not even attempt it if there is the possibility of damaging the pup. Other than the pickup issue is there anything else major or possibly guitar damaging that I should know about. :?:

Thanks,
Russ

I've read in an old thread long ago that it was not possible to remove it because you would need to pull it so hard that it will mess the coil inside therefore killing the pickup...... now I dont own these pickups so I dont know for sure but thats what I've heard!! :)

Thanks Synkronized, looks like thats the only answer I'll get for now. Everybody's probably over there on the strat forum reading the Hwy 1 vs. JV debate. Pretty funny stuff. Guess I'll just leave the pup covers be. Who knows, the black may grow on me. Infact, I still have a couple more payments until I even get the guitar. I just can't stop thinking about it.

Theres people cropping up wanting black covers for their scn's from time to time. I'd hang about and see if you can get a swap sorted out. Just swap pickups with them, leave the covers alone. I'm pretty sure the 3rd (green) wire is attatched to the cover and earths it.

It may be worth contacting the man himself about it

Thanks nikininja. I see you're sporting the Monte Allums site address now. You must be happy with those nut files. :D

I checked in "The Complete Guide to Guitar and Amp Maintenance" book I have and the author (Richie Fliegler) says the covers can't be removed. That's his comment about covered pickups in general -- you will almost certainly ruin the coils if you try it.

Sporting it with pride mate. 3 working days for my order to cross the atlantic for £3.50 postage. You just cant beat that kind of service. The files are great too. I'd been struggling with the low end intonation on my deluxe and got it sorted in 15minutes thanks to those files.

Mr Allums is a true gent.

Hey, I have a hot rod 57 vintage with white SCN pups and a dimarzio hot rails bridge pup in white. I want to change them to black. I would be v.interested in a trade.

Rich.
