Dont magnets require heat of near supernova temperatures to demagnetize? I found this page on alnico magnets dunno if its relevant
http://www.coolmagnetman.com/magcare.htm
Will de-magnetizing pickups lower the output of my vintage noiseless pickups?

Yes. Or extreme shock can do it too.

Or a much larger (stronger) magnetic field (like the EMP pulse of nuclear explosion).

Or some kind of electric motor like Martian said. Many of us old timers who have cassette recorders own demagnetizers which we used in the regular mainenance of the unit .... I don't know how those work or if they are strong enough to affect a pickup.

And, yes, if you can weaken the magnets, you can lessen the output.

That is one way they will demagnetize. AC current (as I alluded to) will also demagnetize them.

In a direct answer to your question, yes. The stronger the magnet, the brighter and more aggressive it will sound and louder too. In comparison, a weaker magnet in the same pickup will give a more mellow sound and lower output. In part, this is why there are three common magnetic strengths in so many traditional type Strat pickups. These are, Alnico II, Alnico III and Alnico V magnets. These different strengths in conjunction with the pickup's coil(s) will aid in determining the sound/output of the pickup. Ceramic magnets on the other hand, are the most aggressive of the bunch used in pickups and cannot be partially charged to different strengths like the Alnico types can nor do they interact with the pickup's coil(s) in shaping the pickup's sound. Loosely speaking, their inherent strength is equal to or beyond that of Alnico V.

A common situation among Vintage Noiseless (VN) owners is that they elect to keep the pickups further away from the strings than they usually do with other pickups for optimum tone. Another common situation is that oftentimes, they prefer some or all 250K resistance pots over the ambiguous OEM recommendations of 500K ohm and/or 1,000K ohm (meg) resistance pots in an attempt to keep the 'glass' down and remove some of the 'anemia' perceived in these pickups. In effect, they are mimicking an Alnico II or III pickup's response assisted by a more appropriate pot resistance value for an Alnico II or III pickup with this now reduced output.

As the VNs have Alnico V magnets OEM, it follows that a weaker strength OEM Alnico magnet would serve to satisfy better for the aforementione group and subordinately, the resistance value of the pot(s) would then be a matter of personal choice rather than a corrective action priority.

The pickup is fixed and sounds great!

I followed the instructions on www.stewmac.com, but I just used some stronger magnets that I already had in the house (stronger than refrigerator magnets, but I don't know if they are as strong as those sold by stewmac).

Anyway, it works and sounds great. The output is fine.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I'm not going to nuke a few magnets to check that one out, I'll take your word for it mate. The missus would go mad at the mess created in her kitchen.

I do have a tape blanker and some useless pickups knocking around thats worth looking at though.

Who knows i may yet derrive some use out of the VN's.
