First of all - Hi to the forums!!

I'm interested in buying some SCN's for my Strat. But I've been reading a number of web reviews in which people have been claiming that they are problematic and that they are microphonic. They will cost a lot of money out here where I'm living now in mid-Europe, so I wanted to check this out with people who are in the know.

The other question I had was to do with VN pickups, some people have said they cannot discern any difference in tone between the SCNs and the VNs? Just wondered if anyone wanted to comment.

Next, I couldn't find any links to manuals for said SCN pickups, but someone else claimed they needed to be installed on a non-ferrous bridge. Which sounded at first a bit strange? Is this the case? I have a cool rail in there at the moment, originally a Kent Armstrong one, and its been ok.

Lastly someone said use a 500k volume pot? Is this the case? A link to a manual would probably really help, but I couldn't find one.

Many thanks Paul!

Welcome to the Forum.

While I can't answer your questions, I can point you to the place to go to get the answers you want. Go to www.billlawrence.com and send an email to Becky with you SCN questions.
While you are at Bill's website check out his pickups too!!!

Welcome to the forum! Follow up on Chets advice. I have SCN's in my MIA ash Deluxe and have never had any problems. I love the sound of them. Some people don't ,but in concert with the S-1 switching I can get just about any voice I want out of them. Good luck in what ever you do! :)

Yes, that would be Becky, Bill's wife. You got answers to your questions?

Funnily enough I didn't ask the questions! I ended up gazing cow eyed at Bill's pickups for a while as is my way with gear, then I phoned. I wasn't sure what the relationship was between Bill & Fender, so I didn't ask too much about the SCNs.

I had originally lined up a US dealer to mail me a loaded Pickguard. I did speak to Fender in the UK earlier today, the guy I spoke to said he wasn't aware of any design/build issues with the SCN pickups. I just didn't want to distance buy them and have long range problems afterwards! Buying them from a dealer out here in Middle Europe is not practical as they would cost a fortune. For example Dimarzios here are selling like 200 Euros a piece it's crazy! I'm all for the social welfare of folk, but I'm also a musician!

Bill's pickups seemed very well priced, and it's always a pleasure for me to deal with smaller companies. I think Becky is going to email back, so I can ask some more questions then if needs be. The personal touch is always v. reassuring when buying from abroad. In late decade one of 2000, i prize this!

I play through a Hafler T2 into a Tweed Bassman, just a little reverb from a rather wasted Boss GT5. In the other thread that pedal with a spring looks a great idea, I have always thought digital stuff detracted majorly from tone. The stock pickups in my 1989 Strat are a thing of beauty, but the 60 cycle hum grates on me. After years of teaching students with poorly wired electric guitars the hum for me really detracts from the music. I use new cables etc, and the amps only a year old.

I have read articles about how to shield the beasts, but I'm a musician, and not so much an electronics buff. Kent Armstrong did a great job of wiring me up the Strat back when he lived in Kent UK. I loved it at the time, he put in 3 switches and some phasing stuff that I was into during that period. But as I age I begin to lust for a single coil back in the bridge, and the simplicity of a 5 way. I mean there's enough other stuff to be thinking about as the chords flash past without trying to remember which switch does what!

If I'm not mistaken Bill and Fender worked together in the development of the Fender SCN pick ups.

Thanks for the link fhopkins! Much appreciated.

I'm caught about which pot to use, 500k was mentioned. As far as I know normally these were 250k's? I notice a lot of people on the Harmony Central site are proclaiming this to be the way forwards. What exactly does the pot 'k' do ? Please give it to me in laymans terms!

I know little about electronics..I finished in music, the other building!

I'm not a electrical tech. but I think it has something to do with resistance of current. There are some knowledgeable people on this forum that can explain it all to you. I think all you need 250k
I believe that's what is in mine.

Bill is the designer of the SCN's and moved his shop from PA. to Corona, CA to work with Fender on designing other pickups for them.
His own line of pickups are fabulous and I would recommend them to anyone!!!!

Thanks Chet! That is what I thought I read about Bill. The man knows his stuff and has been doing it a long time, not a Johnny come lately!

Where did the OP go?

I have been doing business with Bill and Becky for years, dating back to their shop in PA. After they moved to CA my brother and I went down and they basically closed the shop for the day for us. It was amazing the things we found out that day. And before you ask I don't remember much of it.

Here is a pic from that day:

That's me on the left, Bill in the middle, and Redmax61 on the right.
