The music I play is classic and blues-based rock. What do artists like Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, John Mayer play? What type did Stevie Ray Vaughan play?

Are the pickups that Fender make even better today than what these artists played in the past? I wonder what the most common pickups where that were used by these type of artists?

Thanks for any of you guys knowledge.

I'm pretty sure that Eric Clapton uses noiseless pickups now, but he used to use the pickups that came in his 50's/60's strats. Same as SRV, it's stock. You've got to remember that back then, there was only one Fender Stratocaster.
Eric Johnson and John Mayer most likely have pickups that Fender made specially for them, but I don't know, I'm just assuming that.

T-G-S,
Thaks for your response. I know that there are guitars made like the ones these artists used. But, these artists aren't getting any specially made pickups just made for them, or are they?

But, yea your right that up until just the past decade or a little over most of the artists played what Fender placed on the guitars for them.

Based on the type of music that I enjoy playing, what pickups would be better than the ones that Fender normally puts on a factory made guitar. It seems like there is alot of positive attitude about the Texas pickups. What about the CG '69 pickups ( I think that's the proper name)?

From what I understand they make the pickups for artists based on what the artist wants, but they also include those same pickups in the artist's model. With the exception of SRV, who had little or nothing to do with actually designing and playing the Texas Specials, even though they're sort of SRV inspired.

I have Texas Specials in my Squier that I'm very, very happy with. I didn't expect them to make me get that elusive SRV tone, I just got them because I liked them. They have a fatter tone than normal Strat pickups, but they still have plenty of brightness and twang, that's what I was after. I can't tell you how huge of an impact they made to that guitar's tone, I'm never going back to stock Squier pickups. I'd highly recommend any set of Fender Custom Shop pickups based on what I hear in the Texas Specials.

I've also tried Tex-Mex pickups, and they sound much different from the Texas Specials. More traditional, I think.

I've also heard very good things about Fender Fat '50s pickups (mainly from people looking for SRV tone), and Fender 57/62 pickups (mainly from people after a John Mayer type tone). I've also heard good things about the 69's, though I've never tried them. I'd highly suggest searching for those pickups on youtube and listening to them there. I didn't have the opportunity to try any guitar equipped with Texas Specials before I put them in my guitar, so I had to trust what I heard on youtube. I'm glad I did. :)

I read somewhere Gilmour has a set of Kinman Woodstock pickups in one of his strats. I believe Brad Paisley also has Kinmans in one of his Teles, the Broadcaster set if i remember correctly. www.kinman.com
