If I shield the back of my scratchplate on my 72 Tele Custom RI and also the cavities as well am I in danger of messing with the electronics in any way given what comes with the guitar stock and how do I prevent such a thing from happening?
Thank you.

There are lots of nice web-based how-to's and tutorials, and probably some videos on YouTube about how to do this. If you research whats out there, and it doesn't make sense, or you still fear damaging something, then get a professional to do it. Some techs may even let you sit-in for a small fee (because they presume once you learn how to do it yourself, you may not be back anymore  ). From my experience, it would be very hard to screw up the electronics while shielding a guitar, not saying it can't be done, but then again, that also depends on how much experience you have with guitars and soldering irons...

When shielding, you have to be careful, but it's not a major thing to do.

First off, shielding the pick guard alone does nothing.
You must then tie it in with everything else.
This is usually done by having a piece of braid laid underneith the pickguard and the control plate.

In the neck pickup area, make sure to trim back enough around the opening on the pickguard so that you do not touch the metal pickup cap.

When you do the pickup cavities, make sure the shielding tape is pressed well into the cavity. Overlap at the top a bit so that the foil on the pickguard make contact with the cavity foil.

The copper shielding tape is very thin...AND...sticks like crazy, so try and get it right the first time.

In the control cavity, there is very little extra space, so again, make sure the tape is pressed very tightly against the walls and base. You don't want the selector switch or capacitors making contact.

Hope this helped a bit.

It did bro, except for the part about a piece of braid. What do you mean? What material and where exactly?

Thanks!

I just took a piece of braided copper (like what they use for shielding on coaxial (cable tv) cable.

Cut a piece about one inch or so long, loosen the screw on the control plate closest to the pickguard and slip a bit of the braided copper under it.
Tighten that screw back down.
Then , with the other end under the pickguard, tighten the screws on it.

Thing I forgot to mention is that you want to make sure you either shield the wire tunnels , or shield the pickup wires running throught the tunnels, or use a piece of wire to connect the pickup cavities and control cavity all together.
