If you want real SRV tone, go for Fender 57/62 Pickups. I had mine specially underwound, for my "The Black One" Replica. perfect for emulating Stevie and John's tone.

Please tell us more about your specially underwound '57/'62 pickups.
Who did that for you? What do they spec out to now? The resistance, I mean.

IIRC, they aren't real hot to begin with (I'll have to check what mine spec out to). Whatever, it sounds cool, as I like low output pickups.

I ordered them from fender directly through my local dealer (If you can call that directly)

since all three pickups are the same resistance and can be used in any slot, I made sure to make the resistances different. the neck is at 5.1-5.3k, the middle is at 5.9-6.0k, and the bridge is at 6.3

once this is done, they really give off the Big-Dipperish sound. I set them almost flush to the body too, so they are really, really quiet. They are in my "The Black One" Replica

Thanks for the reply.

I'm going to keep that in mind.

I'm glad to see other fans of low output pickups here.

It seems a lot of guys want to go the other way though. Oh well.

Maybe it was just my set in particular. sounded horrible and very trebley clean, and grungy when driven. bad pickups for the music and songs I play and cover. I played a SRV Sig and didn't notice much difference. sorry that I feel this way.
I know these pickups arent for everyone.Usually the complaints are they are too middy not trebley.I have 2 guitars with them andthey sound really nice and balanced.I do know the height has to be adjusted. Some people even run them flush to the pickguard.I play mine through a fender tube amp (3 different ones actually) and they sound very stratty clean andi use a tubescreamer with a flat eq and roll the tone off to about 6-7 when i engage the tubescreamer.

well every set comes with a wiring diagram. I suggest taking it to a repair shop or guitar tech in your are to have them install it (so you don't void your warrenty)

I'm wondering if ekuio89 is asking about making his pickups underwound?

If that's the case, ekuio89, you have to remove the white lead and the solder from that eyelet, undo the wire there, unwind a bunch from the coil, testing it every so often until it reads your desired resistance, cut the wire off, hook it back up to the eyelet with a few wraps and then resolder the white lead to it.
