I received my Fender 57/62' pickups today and started to install them and realized there were no markings on the backs of the pickups. How am I supposed to know what position they belong in? I called Fender's customer contact number where I was told that all three pickups are the same pickup and it does not matter where I put them. If this is true did I really replace my unique pickups for the same pickup in three different positions? So when playing on the neck pickup and switching to the bridge pickup the only difference in sound or tone is the difference in where the pickup is located in relation to the bridge? Seriously?

I hate to tell you this but what Fender told you was correct. All 3 pickups are identical right down to the winding and the phasing.

Hmm, I think I've read about this issue before, but I just got to wondering, would one be better off buying two single '57/'62 pups for bridge and neck but buying some other pup for the middle to get the noise cancellation in positions 2 and 4? Are there any (other) ways to get noise cancellation w/ the '57/'62 set?

Wouldnt soldering the middle pickup in reverse make it reverse wound and cancel the hum?

No, that wouldn't work.

Because the magnetic polarity of the middle pickup isn't the reverse of the other two pickups.

You need both: RW/RP = reverse wired, reverse (magnetic) polarity

this was a helpful thread.

Im getting ready to install these in my newest build tomorrow, and i would have been quite confused.

Is it really true though? i read a review from a guy saying that he wired them in wrong, but then moved them around and they sounded different, like they do have a place to go. maybe just in his head?

It is really true that there is only "one" type of '57/'62 pickups. When I bought a "set" way back in the mid-90s, each pickup came in it's own big plastic box! i.e., not really a set.

But, because of variation, they may not all measure the same. Do you have a digital multimeter to measure the resistance of the pickups? If so, you could be the one with the highest DCR in the bridge position to balance the sound out. Other than that (and putting the black wires to ground and the white wires to the switch), they have no place to go.

You could also experiment with different PUP heights for each individual PUP.
